Help! I Need to change OS from Korean to English

I want to buy the Fujitsu convertible tablet PC T4010 series here in Korea
where I now live. But all the products have the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
2005 in only Korean, no english version yet (not even the english version of
the software separately.) The vendors are not sure how to go about any
conversion in the OS for fear of messing things up (driver problems etc).
Does anybody have any idea how to resolve this problem (ie to change the
interface to english)? I checked the internet to see if installing the
Windows XP tablet PC Edition 2005 MUI (Multilingual User Interface) would
help but so far am not quite clear. Also I can't buy the Tablet PC outside
Korea because a Korean is buying for me using his Visa card issued locally
and paying on a monthly plan. So please HELP!

Re: Help! I Need to change OS from Korean to English

You would need to check with Fujitsu to see if maybe they would trade
machines for you. The Windows XP Pro operating system with the Tablet PC
Edition superset is only available for use like that via an original
equipment manufacturer (OEM).

Re: Help! I Need to change OS from Korean to English

Hello Chris H.,
I know from experience that you can't just change the OS via options. You need to get a new copy of the OS - one in English. I think that US export laws might control your ability to receive that software/hardware (not sure about that). You could purchase the device in the US and have it shipped to you in Korea (I'm sure that there is a website out there somewhere which will accomodate you). If you really, really needed the Tablet PC edition CD, I think it's included in an MSDN subscription. But an MSDN subscription usually runs about $1200, so I doubt you want that. Your best bet is to buy the machine online in the US (or UK) and have it shipped. A Korean Visa should still work on Amazon.com - I know I can purchase stuff from Korea using my American Visa card. Monetary conversions are done at the time of purchase, so you don't need to worry about exchange rates. In fact, now is a good time because the dollar is doing really poorly - recently hit a 12 year low against the yen!

Matt, you're not responding to the original poster. I offered the
suggestions of how to handle the situation, which is the way it needs to be
done. You cannot simply purchase an English "copy." The Tablet OS is only
available for regular usage via an OEM Tablet PC.

Re: Help! I Need to change OS from Korean to English

Hello Chris H.,
You are correct on both counts! Sorry for replying to you instead of the original poster. I was trying to reiterate that you could not simply make a Korean version of the OS into an English version of the OS via options settings. I may have been oversimplifying when I said that the version he needed was an "English version". I meant that an OEM copy from a US distributor would be in English. Also, an MSDN copy of the Tablet PC OS might also work for him, provided he was willing to subscribe for this single need. Of course, that also assumes that the Tablet OS is provided in a MSDN Universal subscription (I'm pretty sure it is based on the content of this article about making a Tablet PC with a normal laptop - http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/wire...tablet_pc.html)

Re: Help! I Need to change OS from Korean to English

MSDN subscriptions are for developmental purposes only, not to change the
operating system because a user wants to. The availability is still only on
an OEM machine, not as a purchase from one of the companies, since each has
their own setup. That's why I recommended contacting the original OEM.

Re: Help! I Need to change OS from Korean to English

Hello Chris H.,
I admit, that as a developer myself, I tend to see the MSDN subscription as a panecea when it comes to needing software. I wasn't intending to suggest anything untoward, just trying to offer helpful advice. I seriously doubt that anyone who doesn't already have a MSDN Universal subscription will attempt to obtain one simply for licensed copies of an OS - too expensive. I will gracefully back off and publicly admit that you are right - chasing down the manufacturer will be a FAR more cost effective means of changing OEM installed software.
Speaking of OEM installed software, the original post made me believe that the machine had not been purchased yet, and overseas purchases were being disregarded only because a foreign credit card was going to be used. Since VISA is accepted everywhere you want to go (including Korea and the US) my opinion is that the original poster should convince his purchasing agent to shop on Amazon.com or some other US website. Overseas shipping is usually available and currency exchanges are handled as part of the transaction.

I'm sure Fujitsu in Korea (http://kr.fujitsu.com/) could work something out,
if contacted locally.
