Windows 7 RC1 install on IBM x41 tablet. Anyone done this?

I just purchased a used IBM/Lenovo X41 tablet machine. It is running XP
Tablet. I am interested in trying out Windows 7 as a clean install on this
computer. Has anyone done this or have any ideas on the best way to get it
to working? I am somewhat familiar with the W7 install, I have it on a
Virtual Machine running on my desktop. If you have any ideas on the
installation on the X41, I would appreciate your reply. Thanks!

I don't have an IBM/Lenovo but the other day I installed Win7 RC on my
good old HP tc1100 (which had originally been running under XP TabletPC
edition and later under Vista).

Most things worked fine immediately.

In addition I had to install the COMPAQ/HP "Q-Menu" application (which
offers a menu for most features when the "Q" hardware button is used.
This needed the nNvidia graphics drivers (both from HP's XP downloads,
HP does not offer any Vista things for my old model).
Furthermore I installed the XP drivers for the TI card-reader. Although
this is a trouble kid everything went fine in so far.

What dose not work so far:
Three of the hardware buttons (originally assigned for (a) rotation (b)
TIP and (c) Windows Journal) are not operable. All other hardware
buttons work fine.

And there is one bigger problem:
If the pen is moved to the utmost top (in landscape mode) resp. the
utmost right (portrait mode) in an area of app. 9 mm the pen shows a
terrible flickering and is not really functional. This does not happen
in any other area of the screen.
Calibration does not help.
It could be that I has made a mistake when during the install the
initial calibration screen came up where the outer birders had to be
set.
Therefore I will run a new install from scratch.

As a possible advice:
Check on Lenovo's site for the drivers and utilities both for XP and
Vista and try them out in case something is missing in Win7.

Re: Windows 7 RC1 install on IBM x41 tablet. Anyone done this?

Great info... thanks.

With that info, it appears that tablet functionality is becoming an
integral part of ms' DT os... there are several computers which have
screen input capabilities which do not appear to advertise themselves as
"tablets"

>> TI card-reader. <<

is that your SD card reader?

If so, two thoughts...

First, mine is disabled every time the computer comes out of suspend (or
hiberantion) mode... I posted here earlier about devcon.exe which is a
downloadable command line version of device manager.

Once installed, the following shortcut will wake up any sleeping devices
and you can add a "hotkey" to the shortcut such as <ctrl><Alt><C> to
easily execute it.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\devcon.exe rescan

Second, the Fuji SD slot is not SDHC compatible, which is normally not a
problem for me as I avoid SDHC cards because of their incompatibility
with many of my devices such as pocketpc's, this page makes for
interesting reading.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Getti...ds-40379.shtml

Not sure if I trust it as I think SDHC requires SDHC compatible
hardware... i.e. SanDisk offered free card readers with the cards rather
than posting driver updates for their existing SD card readers.

Yes, especially the new Touch-Screen series (just like the HP we had
been talking about a longer while ago). And it seems that new "double
touch" technology (which allows for touching more than just one spot at
the same time [similar to what the iPhone brought]) will be implemented
by several manufacturers.
As the the project of UMPCs turned out to have been not too successful,
possibly some netbook sized devices with touch-screen features might be
a new route.

Yes, a TI 1620 - really old device which on my tc1100 did not allow fir
more than just 1GB. I had tried really everything - trying all drivers
available - under XP, to no avail. The same under Vista. In some thread
in some forum in the web I read that this reader was limited to 1GB
hardware wise.

This never happened with my tc1100. Perhaps one of the Fujitsu issues
discussed in the other thread.

Must have been a longer while ago. No longer available in the Msnews
server :-(

Interesting. Thanks fro the tip.
I'll look around for this utility.

Thanks fro the reference. Never tried a SDHC card (mainly because my PDA
dies not support that).
Just struggled with the "2GB Won't work" issue.

Did you try the HP driver the article is based upon?

LOL
I have several SD to USB adapters (among others a HP "USB Digital Drive"
which has a great design) but I'd really like to be able to use a card >
1GB in the slot of my tc1100.

Not sure what the "scroll time" for all of the msnews servers are, but,
for several years, google groups has mirrored all of the msnews sections.

http://groups.google.com/group/micro...tabletpc?hl=en

And, they have full (and good) forum message search capabilities back to
the google groups start date.

It's always been rather short. At present this group starts with Feb
27.

I know.
But I really hate to change from the NewsReader to Google.
BTW: Do you know the syntax to
(a) call a certain thread directly?
(b) call a posting directly with the MID?

TIA

Mozilla mail/newsreader client makes doing either a non issue... so, I
am not sure your context with respect to "syntax"

searching, however, is far better under google... I bookmark the url and
use google groups only for searching this and other nntp groups, not
reading nor responding.

???

There is a possibility to call a certain thread *directly* by adding
some elements to the URL.
The same for messages with the MID in the URL.

I hardly ever posted via Google Groups. But I search there and I read
there when a thread has been scrolled from MS newsserver.

An additional question - although TOT -:
How can one search in multiple groups if a certain site, f.e. all groups
in the microsoft.public.vista.* hierarchy ??

Re: Windows 7 RC1 install on IBM x41 tablet. Anyone done this?

If you paste the message id into any mozilla browser address window, it
pulls up the message... for example, your message;

news://public.msnews.microsoft.com:1...TNGP05.phx.gbl

ie won't (can't) do the same, but, depending on your file association
settings, pasting it into ie will result in ie calling outlook
express... however, since outlook express is brain dead, the ":119" has
to be removed first.

I use the current incarnation of the "mozilla suite" which includes
browser, email client, newsreader, html editor and several other
tools... the email client and newsreader are very powerful and have a
good interface... there are several options in the newsreader that no
other newsreader provides such as "threads with unread" (see,
http://bevhoward.com/moz.htm#News) which saves an unbelievable amount of
time.

As for threads, running seamonkey from the command line with the /n
switch and message id used to open the message in the seamonkey
newsreader, but that no longer works. You can, however, use the
information from the message in the browser to get to that newsgroup and
filter down to the specific message and thread.

did this finally connect with what you were asking?

Just wondering:
Where does the "119" come from? Is it part if the original MID?

Thanks for the pointer.
So far I have not been using any other browser than Netscape (initially)
and then IE (now IE8 the which causes problems with opening attachments
in WinMail on my systems).

Seems rather complicated :-( :-(

> did this finally connect with what you were asking?

Unfortunately not at all :-( :-(

What I am after:
a) Searching in the mirrored groups with Google and restricting the
search to certain groups (f.e. all of microsoft.public.de.windows.vista)
with using a URL;

b) Calling a certain thread in a mirrored group by it's name using a
URL;

c) Calling a certain news message in mirrored group using its MID in an
URL.

But AFAICS that's TOT in here.

Rainald

it's the news url "port" number... when using ie to pass a mid to
outlook express, it has to be removed.

Sorry couldn't understand your need.

:-( :-(

I'm sorry fir not having been able to express myself clear enough :-(
I'll have to try it somewhere else.
