| USB Mouse Problems I'm having some problems with my Toshiba Portege Tablet PC. I'm running WinXP Pro and Office 2003. When I added an external (USB) keyboard and mouse I started having some issues. My mouse sporatically jumps around on it's own and often brings focus to different windows on my desktop. It seems to happen most often in applications using MSWord (MSWord itself and MSOutlook which uses MSWord as it's editor). I'll be typing along and the mouse cursor will reposition itself in another area of the document. I've disabled the integrated mousepad and have made sure I have the latest MSFT driver for my USB mouse. Any other help would be most appreciated. Randy |

| Re: USB Mouse Problems A lot of times, Randy, the mouse jumping around is a graphics driver issue. Are you running XP SP2 and the Tablet PC Edition 2005? If so, you should update with all the XP SP2-specific drivers on the Toshiba web site. There's a slew of them. -- Chris H. | Re: USB Mouse Problems Thanks for the prompt reply Chris, I really appreciate it. I'm running WinXP TabletPC Edition 2005 with XP2 installed. I'm totally up to date on both Window and Office 2003 updates. I've also got the latest video driver available installed. After a little testing, I've concluded that my mouse cursor randomly jumps around and changes focus on modal windows ONLY when I've got a full size USB Microsoft keyboard installed. I unplug it and my problems disappear. I've got the latest keyboard driver available. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance for your help. Randy |

| Re: USB Mouse Problems Are you docked with the Protégé? I'm trying to picture in what scenario you're using an external keyboard with that Tablet PC. Sounds like a conflict is going on there. -- Chris H. Intellitype or whatever it was called? (forgot exactly) You didn't mention which particular keyboard you're using, but if you don't have a lot of buttons to map, have you tried uninstalling the software and just letting it work natively? | Re: USB Mouse Problems Well, I travel quite a bit and the tablet is excellent for meeting note taking and such. But when I'm at my office, I prefer a larger keyboard, monitor and mouse. I don't have a docking station, just an external monitor plugged into the external VGA port on the back of the tablet and a MSFT keyboard and mouse plugged into each of the 2 USB ports. All is well until I connect the keyboard. Often times (even while I type this) my cursor position moves from this modal window and repositions itself on the far left edge of the desktop. This current IE window loses focus. When in MSWord, the cursor will stay within the MSWord application window, but will reposition itself in another part of the document (within the same view) and just start accepting keystrokes at this new point. Makes for some interesting typing. I've tried different mice as well as keyboards with the same result. | Re: USB Mouse Problems I haven't tried what you're doing, but you might try disabling the HID keyboard in Device Manager and then hook up the external keyboard to see if that's what is causing the issue. -- Chris H. Alternatively, if you never installed the I tried the Micrososft Basic Optical mouse (USB) and the Microsoft Internet keyboard on a co-workers Toshiba TabletPC (a 3500 also) and experienced the exact same problem. I'll try disabling the driver for the HID integrated keyboard and see what happen's. In the mean time, I've started using a new HP laptop with more disk, more ram and a faster proc. Everything is working nicely. I'll miss the tabletpc's capabilities but I'm going to go with the HP for now. I could probably get this figured out, but hey, I've got work to do :) Thanks the your help, Randy |

| Re: USB Mouse Problems Chris, I had this problem also, and just found the fix. It's 'advanced text services" for apps like notepad, etc. I turned it off, and the erratic mouse stopped. Regional and Language Options/ Languages tab/ Details button/ Advanced tab, UNcheck 'extend text services to all programs'. -- Mark L. | Re: USB Mouse Problems Thanks, Mark, but I really don't see how they're related if you're running the latest drivers. The advanced text services is necessary for additional applications.
