USB composite device

Tablet PC compaq tc 1100. XP SP2. From time to time there is a problem
with this composite usb device. It takes several minutes before Windows
can properly install it and while it's trying to do so, a message keeps
popping up, which is rather annoying. Does anyone know how I can stop
Windows from trying to detect this device over and over again?

(The problem only occurs when the PC has been shut down; it doesn't
occur after a reboot)

Re: USB composite device

Is the device part of your Tablet PC or an add-on? If the former, I would
check
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/fi...e/97_5840.html
for updated drivers. I noted a few of them in October, 2004, if you haven't
already updated. If it is an external device, I'd contact the manufacturer
to see if they have a more current driver.

I really don't know, what it's supposed to do. Everything is working
while Windows detects the device, connection, pen, keyboard, mouse
etc... The only device I have attached to it is a mouse from MS, which
is working while Windows is detecting the usb device.

Re: USB composite device

Are you running Windows XP SP2 and the Tablet PC Edition 2005 on the
machine? If so, have you updated the drivers from HP's site? You may want
to see if they've got a BIOS update, too. I use a USB Notebook Optical
Mouse (little guy, fits in the pocket) and didn't install any of the
Microsoft software for it. The system recognized it, installed the proper
drivers, and I was off and running.

You may want to right-click My Computer, select Properties and then go to
the Hardware tab and pick the Device Manager button to view all the devices
listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers. This will let you know if
there are any issues (usually a yellow triangle and exclamation point) with
the onboard devices. If none are "banged out," I would contact HP support
and see what they have to say.

Same optical mouse for me. No additional software installed. Got the
latest BIOS. What's the difference between 2005 and SP2? I have version
5.1 (build 2600.xpsp2_rtm.04803-2158: Service Pack 2)

No triangle or exclamation, all is well. Already did contact HP. But
waiting for an answer.

Re: USB composite device

Hopefully HP will come up with something, Gérard. Windows XP Service Pack 2
is the number you've cited. The Tablet PC Edition 2005 is the superset,
running on top of the XP operating system, which does all the neat Tablet
things. 8-)

It is noted, if you right-click My Computer and select Properties as:
Microsoft Windows XP
Tablet PC Edition 2005
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

The various operating system definition splits (Pro, Home, Media Center
Edition and Tablet PC Edition) were removed from the startup splash screen
with Service Pack 2 for XP.

I got an answer, but I lost the problem!? I turned it on and off several
times, but no error anymore. I did nothing to repair it. Strange. Maybe
it has to be 'cold' to reproduce the problem.... Most suggestions of HP
I had already done, without an improvement.

Re: USB composite device

Sometimes, especially with all the updates to Windows XP with Service Pack
2, a couple reboots are necessary to get everything written properly to the
Registry. Not that it was the problem, but sometimes. 8-)

Back! I discovered that it's bluetooth from hp. It still takes some
time, after a 'long' power down, to be discovered. No solution from hp.
Did all the updates. Hp says that I cannot remove their bluetooth and
use that from MS, because it's not compatible.
I managed to minimize the time needed to detect the device. I guess it's
about one minute now. So I can live with that.

The ultimate solution from hp was to format and reinstall?!

Gérard do you use Bluetooth all the time? Otherwise, turn it off.

I don't, but even when I turn it off, it is detected again?! Also after
start from hibernation. Even then Windows 'has to' detect the bluetooth
device again. It looks like Windows finds new hardware, because it has
lost track of the hp bluetooth device. But I reinstalled and removed
things in a different order and now it only needs about 30 seconds to
detect the 'new' device.
