Foreign Language support

I understand that only a limited number of foreign languages are currently
supported for hand-writing recognition. Can I still type in all foreign
languages that are available in the Windows XP?

Re: Foreign Language support

Yes, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition is built on top of Windows XP
Professional, so you can type in all languages found in Windows XP
Professional.

Re: Foreign Language support

Windows XP Pro is the operating system, with the Tablet PC Edition superset
running on top of it to give the Tablet features.

If XP SP2 and the Tablet PC Edition 2005 are already installed on the
English version of a Tablet, then the Multilingual User Interface (MUI) Pack
can be downloaded from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Supported in the pack are: Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional),
Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese,
Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal),
Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish.

The Tablet PC Edition 2005 Recognizer Pack, which enabled conversion of
handwriting to text, may then be installed, supporting the following
languages: Chinese (Traditional), Chinese (Simplified), U.S. English, U.K.
English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. This pack
may be obtained from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Please note that the speech recognition engines are not included in the
above.

Re: Foreign Language support

Just note that the Tablet PC Multilingual User Interface Pack requires the
Windows XP Multilingual User Interface Pack installed first. Which I believe
is available only for Volume Licensing customers, or if you're lucky,
preinstalled by an OEM on request.

Re: Foreign Language support

Chris,

I am attempting to get the japanese handwriting recognition installed, but
to date, I have had only partial luck. I have installed the XP MUI
(Japanese), downloaded and installed the Tablet MUI and Recognizers
(mentioned in your post). I have also setup the language and regional
settings (support for East Asian languages, and added Japanese as an input
language). I have also made downloaded and installed all of the High
Priority updates and SP2 from Windows Update.

In the Input Panel, I can switch the language to Japanese, and then switch
to the writing pad, which will do the ink->text conversions. However, I get
an error when attempting to convert ink to text (in japanese) while in
journal. "[Text Correction] The requested command cannot be completed
because required components cannot be found. If this problem persists after
restarting, contact your system administrator."

Do you have any ideas of what I have missed, or what I need to do in order
to get journal to convert my ink to text?

Re: Foreign Language support

Perhaps you should first re-examine the Advance Text Services area, and make
sure you've got three (four if you're running Office 2003) services
installed. If that's okay, then you're probably caught in-between things as
described from a Knowledge Base article:
=====
Typically, the Tablet PC Input Panel Writing Pad retains the most recent
non-East Asian language that is selected in the language bar. However, if
you install the Tablet PC Recognizer Pack, you may incorrectly reset the
Writing Pad language to German. To set the Writing Pad back to a language
other than German, change the language bar to the non-East Asian language
that you want, and then change it to the appropriate East Asian language.
For example, to set the Writing Pad to English and the on-screen keyboard to
Japanese, change the language bar to English, and then change it to
Japanese. Because English was the last non-East Asian language that was set,
the Writing Pad is set to English, and the rest of the Input Panel is set to
Japanese.
=====

Sounds to me, it just may be a matter of the sequence which you're
deploying. 8-)

Re: Foreign Language support

Thanks for your help Chris, it looks like it's a problem with the Text
services - when I remove Japanese (as an input language) and re-add it, the
only options I can change are the "Keyboard Layout/IME" and "More Text
Services" are the only options that I can change. "Handwriting Recognition"
(and the checkbox for it) is disabled.

Any ideas besides uninstalling and reinstalling everything?

Re: Foreign Language support

I really don't have a clue in this department, Gary. I contacted Fritz
Switzer, another Tablet PC MVP who is a languages expert
(www.abletfactory.com) and he said he's experienced similar issues, but on
other languages. He currently doesn't have Japanese installed.

I might suggest, however, that you use a Restore Point from System Restore
to back out of the current MUIRP install and try installing again. Remember
too, the MUI (not MUIRP) will do nothing on a Tablet PC unless you also have
the operating system language pack installed which is only available to
volume license (corporate type) accounts.

Try doing the Restore Point, and only install the MUIRP and see how it
reacts.
