Where to Buy XP Tablet OS for Older Fujitsu Stylistic 3400/3500

I have a Fujitsu Tablet PC that is running Win98 and works well. I wanted to
upgrade to XP but I chose a fresh install instead of an upgrade. It loaded
well from bootable XP floppies and a USB CD. I installed the win2k drivers
from the Fujitus website for the tablet specific hardware and all seems well.
I can use the pen as a mouse and get an onscreen keyboard from the
accessability features within windows. What I really lack is the "Real"
tablet support for handwriting functionality. Where can I get the XP Tablet
OS? I scoured the Microsoft site and this forum is the best I could find.
There is mention on the MS site about XP Tablet 2005 upgrade but I find no
download as such. When I did the upgrade to SP2 with standard XP Pro, I did
not magically get the Tablet features.... Any help or advice would be
greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Stephen Jenkins

Re: Where to Buy XP Tablet OS for Older Fujitsu Stylistic 3400/3500

Windows XP Pro with the Tablet PC Edition is only available on an OEM
machine with the proper hardware which is required to run the Ink, etc. The
only other location is via an MSDN subscription for development purposes
only.

Installing on an older machine like you have, even if available, would be a
very disappointing experience, Stephen. I wouldn't even waste my time on
attempting it.

I have a Fujitsu Tablet PC ST3400 with xp pro. I did have the tablet
edition but liked the the built in writing recognition built into
office xp and 2003. Some of these features do not function while using
the tablet pc edition. You can write anywhere and it will convert to
text and works good, what else do you want. When installing or Control
Panel(-->Add remove programs-->Change Office-->add remove features),
choose advanced customization of applications of features and under
"office shared features"-->"Alternative User Interface" inable
"Handwriting". Now go to Control Panel-->Regional and Language
Options-->Languages Tab-->Details-->This is where you can adjust some
of the features like extending this service to all programs and showing
the language bar on the desktop.

The proper Windows XP Pro/Tablet PC Edition software is only available
commercially on an OEM Tablet PC. It is not sold over-the-counter. The
older "tablet" machines, especially those with touchscreens don't have the
proper hardware to run today's Tablet PC Edition.

Re: Where to Buy XP Tablet OS for Older Fujitsu Stylistic 3400/3500

How's XP Pro running on the sucker -- the 3400's top out at 192 MB RAM, right? Is it responsive/quick enough for you with XP Pro?

Any other general comments on a 3400?

I've been looking for a cheap tablet style thing just for taking notes and a little word processing.

BTW, have you seen Evernote (http://www.evernote.com)? It's in beta, but it's looking like a very nice handwriting-capable note taking application. Especially if they implement audio notes, I think it plus something like a 3400 could be a great, cheap note taking appliance.

Unlike these other fellows I don't use handwriting Recog software.
Could I do a successful/Functional Windows XP Home Upgrade on such a

I ask you Can it be done?

Re: Where to Buy XP Tablet OS for Older Fujitsu Stylistic 3400/350

The Tablet PCs all run Windows XP Pro as the operating system. The current
Tablet PC Edition 2005 is only available commercially via the various
manufacturers of Tablets, preinstalled. It is not available for general use
from another source. You probably would be fine upgrading to Windows XP,
however you will not have the functionality available on current Tablet PCs
with their special hardware requirements.

XP Pro install on Stylistic 3400

I bought a Stylistic 3400s from ebay for about $180 w/shipping + 2 good batteries seller was laptopenterprise. You want the 3400s because it comes with the screen/digitizer that works both indoors + outdoors. You can see pics of the difference at;
http://www.tabletpc2.com/Review-Fujitsu4121.htm. That's the newer model of course but you get the idea. Once you use this outside, you'll wonder how you lived before. Forget about the convertibles [tablet/notebook combo] you see everywhere. They work great but can you picture carrying around 5 to 6lbs of stuff on your arm for hours??? The 3400 weighs in at 3.3lbs w/battery. Good battery gets about 1.5hrs/ full charge. mine came with 2 good batteries + ac adapter. Oh get the carrying case w/ x strap custom made for the 3400 $15 ebay. 1 drop w/o and crapola. The 3400 has the best screen size 10.4" 8.9" is lighter but too small. 14" too heavy.
XP pro runs fine on it, mine came with w2k pro, but I installed xp pro on it. You can install home edition if you like, just be sure to install the w2k drivers for the digitizer and such from fujitsu.com or the driver cds.

All in all the 3400s, unless you'll only use it indoors, is a great splash into real tablet computing, sorry pocketpc palm symbian, but 2 1/2" by 2" just doesn't cut it. Use it to browse the internet from your bed ( what about typing you say, onscreen keyboard from accessibility options works great used on tiny palm pilot before too; scribble for T I think not ) just add the wifi to the pcmcia slot, use it for gps, everyday computing, photoshop would crawl but still cool to try out brush stokes [for serious drawing on screen get the cintiq 24" ], scribble notes while out, real notes. You can save your handwritten notes as pics too. But you must use one note 2003 + hard drive upgrade with this unit. Works like a champ. You can p/u an oem version on ebay for $30 with hologram cd + coa.

The 3400 any model s or c comes with a 6GB drive that is slow. You can upgrade it with a newer fujitsu 40 gb or 80 gb notebook drive from newegg.com, just need to buy the 44 pin to 40 pin adapter with the drive to install it. The 40gig comes with a 2mb cache and the 80gig comes with a 8mb cache so either one makes a huge difference in how the tablet performs. You can easily run xp with either drive w/handwriting recognition from tablet edition or office xp, 2003. But I did read from another chap on this forum that tablet edition wasn't that great at least on this model 3400 so switched back to xp pro + office xp w/handwriting and works like a champ he says.

44 to 40 pin adapter?

I am getting the same model from that same e-bay seller and found your post very interesting. I do have a question though, regarding the 44-pin to 40-pin adapter. Is the hard drive in the Stylistic not a standard laptop hard drive or something? Why would you need an adapter to upgrade, and what part would I be looking for on NewEgg to do that? If I have to get an adapter anyway, could I use any maker's laptop hard drive? Any info/links to clarify would be appreciated; I didn't see it explained in the links you posted previously but sorry if I just missed it.

Thanx,

Fiacha

Re: Where to Buy XP Tablet OS for Older Fujitsu Stylistic 3400/3500

Hi there

I have a Toshiba R25 tablet PC running Win XP Tablet edition, and I need to create a recovery/boot cd - because when I bought my laptop, no cd's came with it.

How can I create a recovery/boot cd with just the system files that I have on my laptop?

I don't know which ones to actualy copy onto the CD, and the process of actually doing it....

Any help is greatly appreciated.
