| journal.exe cpu hog I use journal note on my tablet all day every day and it has recently started slowing down. I often have to wait for a minute or two while journal.exe is taking 90%+ of the cpu. It adds up throughout the day and is particularly bothersome while both a client and I are waiting. I have xp with sp 3 and have all virus protection etc. Any ideas why journal note would start taking so much time? Thanks for any help you are able to provide |

| Re: journal.exe cpu hog Are you using Standby and not Shutdown? I find that when things start to get weird, going through a "real" shutdown / restart clears it up. I usually restart my Fujitsu U810 every couple weeks - other times I use Standby. | Re: journal.exe cpu hog Yes, this sometimes seems to correct the problem breifly but I am not sure. I will try it and keep better track of what happens. I do shut down rather than stand by with some regularity. I have also found that just shutting down journal note helps briefly as well, but the problem returns fairly quickly and, like the problem it's self, shutting it down (the computer or just the program) ends up taking time from my work flow. I'll try to track it better and post back. Thanks for your help. | Re: journal.exe cpu hog >> Is there some way of testing your suggestion? << Yes... but don't know how to do it... specifically, shut down the screen digitizer, then take a look at the cpu numbers. That said, might first disconnect the mouse if you have one connected and see if that makes a difference as well. Beverly Howard |

I usually restart > my Fujitsu U810 every couple weeks - other times I > use Standby. A bit off-topic: Really "Standby"?? Hibernation IMO is the better choice if it's not only a shorter period of inactivity. With Standby the machine is still and eats power. Only with Hibernation the power consumption is reduced to zero. And if something goes wrong with Standby the contents if the RAM is lost. With Hibernation everything still is in the HDD. Rainald |

| Re: journal.exe cpu hog >> Only with Hibernation the power consumption is reduced to zero. << While that used to be the case, on the T4215 it's only marginally better than suspend in most cases. Further, (and ironically) "hibernation" works well enough to disconnect the tablet from the ac power supply on the docking station. Research shows that it's not the only laptop with hibernation drain problems, so, I have quit using hibernation altogether and on the docking station primarly use "suspend" since the ac power connection is maintained in that state. Seems the "hibernation" rules have changed over the years, something I found out when I grabbed my tablet _off of the docking station_ to go out on a mobile job only to discover that the battery was completely dead when I tried to power it up. Some research showed that the radio's were still on _even though the hardware switch on the side of the computer was in the OFF position_ Later I discovered that while turning the radios OFF using the control panel applet made a significant difference in hibernation power drain, but something unknown kept turning the radio back on without notification. Even in that state, there was observable power drain in hibernation compared to "shut down" Related, a friend got similarly bitten by his "wake on lan" setting... he suspended the computer and closed the lid after a presentation with the network cord still attached, then removed the cord several minutes later... apparently, unplugging the lan connection woke the laptop up before he put it in the case leading to a dead battery when he removed it later that day. I spent significant time on this with Fujitsu and even though it was escalated, they ultimately said they had no solution. Beverly Howard |

| Re: journal.exe cpu hog Hi Berverly, all if the oddities you report seem really strange i me. It's to be special problems produced by Fujitsu. Nine if the problems you explain ever appeared in my COMPAQ/HP tc1100. I have always been relying on hibernation since the beginning of the nineties - always COMPAQ notebooks and since the ACPI standard reached the desktop computers in all if my desktop machines too. I hardly ever shut down my systems. There is no power drain at all when my tc1100 is in hibernation. There is no difference when the machine is docked. And I really do not understand the wireless issues. When the machine has finished writing the hibernation file and is shut off, the light for wireless is switched off and no power is consumed at all. When you assume that the "rules" might have changed this could only mean that Fujitsu would have made changes which do not confirm with the rules laid down in ACPI standard. And what you report from your friend's experience this just reflects a combination of mistakes on his side. All on all: If the manufacturer keeps to the standard and the user is making the proper settings, hibernation works really fine and IMO is a most basic feature for any portable computer. | Re: journal.exe cpu hog >> special problems produced by Fujitsu << true, but, after posting queries about this on another forum, the responses seemed to indicate that my experiences are not that uncommon. I _really_ need hibernation, but, having been bitten hard once and validating that it was a system problem, not sure if I can ever trust it again... at least not for an extended shutdown for a couple of days or more. Ironically, just purchased a $200 refurbished Acer Aspire One netbook which arrived last week and it does _not_ appear to have the same failings, so your point is validated. At the same time, think anyone who intends to use hibernation should run tests disconnected, docked and connected only to an ac adapter before they rely on using it as the time saved over shutting down and restarting may not be worth the cost if there is no outlet nearby the next time it's needed. I have been using hibernation just for that. My good oooooold Armada M700 (my favorite device except the legendary COMPAQ Portable II) is not used often these days. So it's sitting in hibernation for weeks. No problem ever with battery drain. > Ironically, just purchased a $200 refurbished Acer Aspire One netbook > which arrived last week and it does _not_ appear to have the same > failings, so your point is validated. ;-) > At the same time, think anyone who intends to use hibernation should > run tests disconnected, docked and connected only to an ac adapter > before they rely on using it as the time saved over shutting down > and restarting may not be worth the cost if there is no outlet > nearby the next time it's needed. For sure one should not blindly rely on it. Proper testing is required in any case. Rainald |
