Toshiba Portege 3500 XP Home SP2 failure

I have tried to install SP2 on a Toshiba Portege 3500 Tablet. Installed OK
but failed to reboot although eventually was able to to load as "previous
configuration". Uninstalled SP2.

Updated the BIOS and shut down ZoneAlarm and anti virus.

Tried again but have the same problem as before in that when the drivers
load they fail at alim1541.sys, which I believe is for some obstruse sound
power utility for amplifiers that must be original as nothing much has been
installed on the machine. Cannot recover from this and the system endlessly
recycles even when trying all the safe modes and last successful
configuration option.

Cannot get the tablet to boot off the CD ROM from the Toshiba Recovery CD
which I understand has the Tablet XP setup files on it. Changing the boot
sequence does not work.

Any suggestions? Do I need to boot off an old Start Up disk from a previous
incarnation of windows and try and reinstall XP from scratch?

You may want to check with Toshiba support, and see what they have to say.
I believe the system file you're having problems with may be part of the OEM
motherboard setup. You could also ask them at the same time how to boot
properly from the recovery CD.

Chris,

Thanks for the advice. 24 hours rest and disconnecting cd drive seems to
have solved the problem.

Note for all toshiba notebook/tablet users - The 32 bit pc card cable
supplied with the slimline combo DVD/CDRW drive does not allow rebooting from
the cd-rom. You have to buy a 16 bit pc card cable!!!!! They don't state this
in the small print.

My 3500 came with Toshiba's own CD drive, connected via a PCMCIA card.
There is no trouble in booting that - using the manual's instructions to
choose it as a boot device. But you can't boot a USB connected drive.
I have successfully run their Restore from it (after discovering that
the FAT 32 partitioning they provide is *not* correctly aligned for
converting to NTFS).

I had no trouble running the SP2 upgrade: *but* I did do it using the
full 266MB version downloaded (or from a CD) and run from the hard disk
