| Portege 3505 and SP2 lockup I just installed XP SP2 on my 3505, and now I've got severe lockup problems. I use the built-in WiFi for connectivity. If I use the 'Synchronize offline folders' tool, the system will hang completely (frozen screen, no mouse response). Or if I disable and then enable the WiFi connection from Control Panel, same result. Or if I just wait a while, it'll lock up. I downloaded and installed the latest BIOS and Atheros client utilities from pcsupport.toshiba.com. No effect on the problem. What else should I try? I'm loathe to reinstall Tablet XP SP0 from the Toshiba CDs (assuming I can even find them). Any suggestions appreciated. Cheers Dan |

| Re: Portege 3505 and SP2 lockup Dan, the most common area of problems are (1) need to update or reapply drivers or (2) a system which had parasites, Trojans or a virus on the computer. If you've checked your system for the latter issues as instructed prior to installing XP SP2 and the Tablet PC Edition 2005, then I would check them here on Toshiba's site: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/t...odItemList.jsp Even if you need to reinstall suspect drivers (wireless, graphics, etc.) it is best to do so in Safe Mode (F8 at startup). -- Chris H. | Re: Portege 3505 and SP2 lockup Well, I tried reinstalling the drivers, to no avail. So then I tried uninstalling SP2 using Add/Remove Programs. The result? A lockup in the middle of the uninstall, and now the 3505 can't boot. I get the Windows XP black screen, then straight to the blue screen of death, saying a component wasn't found (unsurprising). I've got a WinXP Home Edition CDROM, but I can't seem to get the 3505 to boot from CD. At startup, using the arrow keys to select the CD or the PCMCIA slot as the boot device causes the CDROM light to come on and its motor to spin, but it still tries to boot from the damaged installation, and blue screens. How does one recover from a damaged XP installation? | Re: Portege 3505 and SP2 lockup Dan, don't even try anything at all with the XP Home edition version. It has nothing to do with a Tablet PC, which runs Windows XP Pro and the Tablet PC Edition superset. Have you tried shutting down the machine, pulling the battery and then disconnecting the power supply? Might give that a go to reset everything. Then put the battery back and reconnect the a/c power. If it doesn't boot properly, try booting using F8 to reach Safe Mode (first) and if that is successful, try doing the uninstall. Failing that, try booting to the Last Known Good. If all that fails, you're looking at a reinstall from scratch with the OEM recovery CD/DVD. -- Chris H. You might try talking to Toshiba - there seems to be a few lockup problems associated with Toshiba laptops (not just Tablets) since SP2. |
