Toshiba Portege 3500 Recovery

I can't boot from my external CD so I have used a bootable floppy from
Chevalier to access the CD which seems to work. I can get at everything on
the Recovery CD, but what do I need to run? There is a BAT file that does
nothing and lots of dos boxes in X:/g_inst/tools, but nothing seems to do
anything.

I am trying for a complete re-install back to defaults.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Gary Griffiths

Re: Toshiba Portege 3500 Recovery

Instead of doing all that, Gary, have you tried using a Restore Point from
System Restore? What is the issue you're trying to correct? The CD should
have a very basic setup.exe or install.exe, depending on how the OEM created
their program on the root from which the Windows XP Pro setup will launch.

Re: Toshiba Portege 3500 Recovery

Chris, I have gone back to the earliest restore point I have and it's still
a mess.

I was so pleased with my tablet that I tried anything and everything that
would go on it. All my software, OneNote, demos, powertoys, games etc. etc.
Then I didn't use it for quite a while.

Now I know what I really want on it (not half as much as I thought I would -
really just my music software (Finale) for work and OneNote (which I love)
for notes) and want to start from scratch.

There is no setup.exe or install.exe on the root of the CD

There is a folder called g_inst, two files with long numbers (00536000) for
names, a dos looking box called SETENV and a BMP called SPAN.

Inside G_INST there is a file called install, but that didn't do anything.

Okay, I understand your situation. I've asked John Dean, one of the Tablet
PC MVPs who has a 3500 to drop by for input. He knows that machine
inside-out and will be able to assist you (hopefully). 8-)

Re: Toshiba Portege 3500 Recovery

Well, John is tied up currently and the knots in the ropes won't let him
post, but he says those recovery CDs are meant to boot for the installation.
He also said, no matter what the BIOS settings are (boot order, select CD,
etc.) you can use F12 during the boot sequence to select booting from the
CD.

However, there's a gotcha here. The 3500s are picky which USB CD-ROM
they'll boot from so it may be you would need to play with the F12 selection
or even trade with a friend or something to get a CD-ROM which will boot.
The Targus external drive (PADVD010) will boot, I know that.

Back again - my tablet rebuild is finished so I have apps again.

Way back when there was a post that mentioned a specific Lite-On drive that
someone was able to boot with on a 3500, as well as a particular sony drive.

I just searched dejanews (google now) and that post seems to no longer be
searchable - it was over a year and a half ago, so may have been dropped off.

If you know anyone with a sony or lite-on drive, ask to borrow it to see if
you can get the recovery cd to boot from it.

Where are you located, anyway? Might be someone who posts in here nearby and
you could just hook up for a face to face meet and have them bring a working
drive you could borrow during the talk. :)

One thing about the Toshiba that bothered me is that they only supported
their own expensive drives, either the PCMCIA or the targus USB. I really
wish they had a list of known working drives to boot from. I had the post
that mentioned the models saved for reference, but I lost it when I changed
newsreader programs a few months ago. :(

My 3500 came with a Toshiba CD drive on a PC card adapter, which boots
fine.
