no pen works on Gateway M275

Someone PLEASE help --I'm getting close to mid-terms at college and
need to get my tablet back in action...

I have had my Gateway M275 for just over a week now (have been
recording & writing a great amount of History notes already), and the
screen is no longer receptive to ANY pen (tried a new one from Gateway
and one from Belkin). On the day that it all stopped working, I was
able to take notes for two of my morning classes; then that afternoon,
no more response to my pen!

The computer came loaded with MS Works, which I superceded with MS
Office XP Small Business (from my desktop, so I could use Word and
Outlook). Before the pen failure, I've also downloaded and installed
the SP2 update, SP1 for MS OneNote, and FranklinCovey Tablet Planner
demo (which, by the way, isn't working at all now).

I chatted online with a Gateway rep earlier today. He recommended that
I either calibrate the pen (duh! it won't even register on the screen!)
or go to a Restore Point. I tried one R-P after another, all the back
to the first, with no success.

Do I need to just re-install everything completely? Or replace the
computer?

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275

I'd take a look at the drivers in device manager, Ralph, and possibly
reinstall the Gateway drivers for your M275. Sometimes the SP2 update sort
of messes with the drivers, so look for updates on the Gateway web site or
install from your recovery CD/DVD.

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275

Question.. when did Belkin start making Windows Tablet PC edition pens?

They didn't --a friend mentioned to me to give a stylus for PDA's a try, so
I did.

I'll give that a try as soon as possible... --would've tried it already, but
I've been swamped this past weekend with Graphic Design and Art History

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275

I've never heard of a PDA pen that works on a tablet pc. PDAs normally use
touch screens while tablet pcs use digitizers. There are some Wacom pens
that will work but generally you must use one designed for a tablet pc.

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275

Tried reinstalling the drivers, as you suggested, but no success.

Is there a possibility that a software program may be causing the problem?
For example, call it coincidence, but the problems just started the day
after I downloaded FranklinCovey Tablet Planner.

Any other ideas?

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275

You don't happen to have one of the pens which needs battery power do you?
If so, have you tried changing the battery? Otherwise, I'd contact Gateway
again. It sounds as if the digitizer has quit on you.

"No batteries included" (or necessary). Seriously, I'm at my wit's end with
all this.

Is it possible that it's a software problem? I haven't been able to start
OR uninstall the FranklinCovey Tablet Planner --could it have a
compatability problem going on?

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275

Well, it sounds to me more like the digitizer has gone south on you, Ralph,
but how about doing some basic checks? Go into Control Panel/Administrative
Tools/Event Viewer and select the Application listing in the left pane.
This will reveal "events" in the right pane, and you should look for either
yellow triangles with black exclamation points or red circles with white X's
in them.

Those are indicators of issues with certain elements, and perhaps if there's
one listed which correlates with the loss of the pen, we could pinpoint a
software error. The other thing is - but I don't know how this would really
invade this much - have you checked your system thoroughly with your
anti-virus, perhaps run a Trojan/parasite detector like AdAware on the
system to make sure it is clean?

There are details which may be helpful here:
http://www.aumha.org/secure.htm Otherwise, I would be on the telephone
again to Gateway to have them determine the issues. Be gentle but firm, and
ask to speak to a supervisor if you don't get assistance at the first level.
Note the names of the people you're speaking with, and the time of day, so
you have a record of the information.

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275

So far I've done the following: scanned the system at least twice with
Norton Anti-Virus & AdAware, got a new digital pen from Gateway, reinstalled
the drivers from the boot disk, taken the computer back through several
Restore Points (before SP2 & other software downloads).

And I just now checked out the Event Viewer --whoa, too many warnings and
errors that I can even begin to understand. Any suggestions where to start?

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275

Remember, you're only looking for yellow triangles or red circles as the
error indicators. Not all entries in the Event Viewer are problems. It is
a tracker of events.

However, if you're saying your have a multitude of errors showing, have you
right-clicked any to see what the error message is about? That information
could lead to a correction of perhaps one of two simple items to get your
system back in shape.

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275

Ralph,

I have the same problem - same results from Gateway support, got a
replacement pen from them etc. My replacement pen worked until I put into
"suspend" mode, when I reactivated the tablet, the pen no longer worked. A
also looked at Event Viewer and had lots of triangles and red circles. Did
you have any success after this point? I'm ready to send the Tablet PC back
at this point.

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275

Hello,
Here at DSU, all freshmen and sophomores recieve m275s. EACH AND
EVERY ONE OF THEM HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM. It appears that the
digitalizer has a poor solder point. If you are in tablet mode (screen
covering keyboard) try pulling up on the top left and right corners of
the screen (or put something between the computer and the screen to
kind of pry it out) while moving around the pen. To fix this problem,
take the screen apart, and put a CD behind the LCD panel (top left
corner) and then put it back together. Or you can send it to gateway,
who will probably do the exact same thing.

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275

It would best to alert the OEM support section. They need to know the
specifics of the issues to get things properly fixed.
