Re: no pen works on Gateway M275

How do you take the screen apart and put a cd behind it.

RE: no pen works on Gateway M275 ALSO ON MY ACER C300!!!!!

I'm reading this thread to find "Help" as my pen will not calibrate on my
Acer C300 Tablet PC. It's like the white arrow is way someplace else rather
than where I want it to go. When I do a restart of the computer, the firs
calibrate goes okay. By the time I get to the OK, something inside my
computer takes the white arrow everywhere else. I'm thinking that it may have
something to do with adaware. So I ran the lavasoft and spybot. Still having
problems. I've had my Tablet PC for 6 months without using the pen. Purchased
a cross pen with hopes that a new pen would do the trick. Pretty sad
situation. Any ideas?

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275 ALSO ON MY ACER C300!!!!!

Could be any of several things, Eileen. Are you running Windows XP SP2 and
the Tablet PC Edition 2005 on the system? If so, have you reinstalled your
pen drivers and graphic drivers since updating? Have you properly set the
handedness in Control Panel?

If everything is current and you have properly configured all the settings,
I would take a look at Acer's support section on their web site for further
information. It could just be you've got a faulty digitizer, and Acer would
need to take a look at it.

Forgot to add too, that if you're using a pen which requires a battery that
battery could be going out. You may need to replace it. 8-)

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275 ALSO ON MY ACER C300!!!!!

Hi Chris --- There's alot of misinformation that you are putting out there. I
have a Gateway M275XL which worked wonderfully well until SP2...followed all
the recommended fixes and none really work. I have upgraded my memory to 1.2g
and when the system is shutting down the pen grabs the curser as well as on
initial start up...then when the Windows start-up screen disappears so does
the pen and cursor control...so what's up and what's the fix...you've been
sending everyone on scavenger hunts and not really fixed the problem. Your
thoughts?

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275 ALSO ON MY ACER C300!!!!!

Sorry you feel that way, Tom. I don't have a Gateway M275XL, and therefore
can only try to pass along experience with other Tablets or what I've dug
out from investigating situations.

If you find you're not getting answers here, or believe them to be
incorrect, please feel free to investigate them for yourself, contact the
Gateway support people since that's the product you own, and then post the
solution. I'm sure we'd all love to hear a single answer to fix each
problem.

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275 ALSO ON MY ACER C300!!!!!

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your reply...the problem is sending folks off in alot of
different directions when the issue rests with XP, NOT NERO, NOT THE PEN, NOT
WACOM, NOT THE BATTERIES and all that stuff. The issues are many as those
with Tablet PC's are telling other potential purchasers the systems don't
work. The problem arises with the installation of XP SP2, and then the user,
without a GOOD KNOWLEDGE BASE, ends up thinking maybe its other software they
loaded e.g. Adobe, Nero or other software. The problem is XP SP2. I have
contacted GATEWAY and WACOM and discovered it's NOT GATEWAY and NOT WACOM but
XP SP2. Don't get me wrong XP and XP2 are GREAT PRODUCTS and I am a MICROSOFT
FAN but I also expect MS to step up to the plate and help resolve issues.
Such as something as simple as emailing Tablet XP SP2 users there are some
problems and that we (MS) are on it. It's kind of like a product recall
versus leaving users to struggle through trying to figure this out on their
own. Gateway uses Microsoft as the OEM operating system so it would make
sense for Microsoft to work with Gateway on how to fix the problem(s) created
by MS. Doesn't this make sense? After adding more memory, uninstalling and
reinstalling programs, including NERO which is getting a bad rap...the
problem was resolved, in my case, by turning off the Windows automatic
updates, including the windows firewall and then reinstalling the XP SP2
updates (just the updates and not XP SP2 in its entirety). I have to tell you
that after working with the University of Illinois Plato system, building
fighter intercept systems and developing the first ATM machines with IBM, I
expect a level of reliability in the systems hitting the streets. There has
got to be a better way and I'll leave it to the experts to fix it...there
livelyhood depends on it.

Best Regards

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275 ALSO ON MY ACER C300!!!!!

All of everything you've mentioned can be an issue, Tom. Like a friend of
mine who complained that since installing Windows XP SP2 he could no longer
get signed in on his local Realtor Board site. I had him check a few
things, and finally went to pay him a visit at his office.

He had installed the Yahoo search tool, and it was blocking the Realtor
website sign-in pop-up. Definitely an XP SP2 issue, huh, Tom?

The reality is that I do ask questions, make suggestions and try to diagnose
problems for people. I admit I don't know all the answers, but try to work
through them. I cannot tell from most original newsgroup posts what Tablet
PC they're on, which version of the operating system is being run (so I
don't know what Tablet PC Edition is there), or anything else about the
particular computer like which drivers they're running.

And I volunteer to do this. I receive no compensation, do it on my own time
(which is plenty because I'm permanently disabled) because I try to keep
active in my own way and help others in the process.

A lot of the issues which are caused by XP SP2 are because the drivers need
to be reinstalled or newer (XP SP2-specific) drivers downloaded from the OEM
support web site for installation. Whether the OEMs are on top of issues or
not is something the owners of their products need to tell them by
contacting to their support section. You know what one of the common tech
support suggestions is? Turn off the Windows Firewall. Can you believe
that?

Several years ago, the Millennium operating system was introduced. At the
time, I had a Compaq laptop, and I don't remember the exact details but I
believe Hibernation caused an issue with the (Compaq) drivers for the
keyboard volume control buttons, rendering them useless. You know how long
it took Compaq to fix the problem? Millennium was released to manufacturing
(pressing of commercial CDs) on June 19, 2000. Compaq didn't come out with
a new driver to fix THEIR issue until February, 2001. And OEMs work right
along with Microsoft's beta teams in the process of developing their
drivers, too.

Remember when Windows XP first came out? It did not include any OpenGL
support for graphics cards. Why? Because the various video card
manufacturers wanted to wait for the final code before writing the drivers,
and not "guess" at the locked-down version. That's the way the industry
works, and some OEMs are quicker than others, but they all work very closely
with Microsoft.

Microsoft does work with their Partners, and a lot, every single day. The
reason I suggest a lot of times to contact an OEM is because the issue is
beyond my (or your) ability to bring in a solution. If we've tried 18
different things, and something is still amiss which may be something like a
faulty digitizer, then the manufacturer needs to be contacted.

As I said before, feel free to jump in here and help other users like I try
to do. Meanwhile, if you want to offer suggestions to Microsoft, please use
the MSWish suggestion page:
http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

I shall still do the best I can here to solve problems and help users.

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275 ALSO ON MY ACER C300!!!!!

As a point of interest as I have installed new software, after discovering
the fix, (reinstalling XP XP2 updates, not XP2 itself) I have had to go back
and reinstall the XP2 updates as new software is added. Perhaps with your
influence you can pass this information onto your friends at MS and ask them
to figure out what is going on then have them post a response back to the
newsgroup.

Thanks

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275 ALSO ON MY ACER C300!!!!!

Microsoft doesn't normally post in the public newsgroups, Tom. These are
for peer support.

What new software did you install, and why was it necessary to reinstall XP2
updates? Error messages? BSOD? Dysfunctional programs? Any errors in
Event Viewer, either Application or System?

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275 ALSO ON MY ACER C300!!!!!

After installing new software the connectivity between the pen and the
computer are seemingly lost. If you open the WACOM driver you can see it is
communicating with the pen as the X,Y coordinates are changing as well as
screen pressure readings. At the same time the cursor does not respond, as
well as any penabled programs. There are no error messages, so the user now
has to reinstall related SP2 udpates and they'll get their cursor to pen
communication back...there's something happening in SP2 that is creating this
issue which I am sure is very frustrating to a number of users.

Re: no pen works on Gateway M275 ALSO ON MY ACER C300!!!!!

What "new software" did you install? Are you talking about XP SP2 and the
Tablet PC Edition 2005, or a software program? Could you please be
specific?

What "related SP2 updates" are you talking about? The XP SP2/Tablet PC
Edition 2005 install is a total package, not piecemeal, and that may be
where your issues are coming from.

It would be very helpful if you could say something like this:
1 - On my XP SP2/Tablet PC Edition 2005, I installed Program A.
2 - After restarting my system, the pen and cursor were not functional.
3 - Etc.

What I'd like to ask is between the pen and cursor not working, did you
attempt to reinstall the Wacom drivers at any time? Did you go into Device
Manager, use Uninstall on the HID listing for the driver, restart you system
and then reinstall the Wacom driver?

Did you go into Device Manager and use Roll Back Driver on the pen install
to try the previous driver? Did you use a Restore Point in System Restore
to go back to when the pen/cursor were working prior to installing "Program
A"?

Specifically what SP2 updates are you talking about? If you go into Control
Panel/Add or Remove Programs, put a check mark in the box next to Show
updates, it will show you each and every Windows XP Hotfix (and related KB
article) with an Installed On date on the right.

Could you please pinpoint exactly what you installed? It would be very
helpful.
