Handwriting in Word

I followed through the earlier posting re handwriting in
word and had all the same problems.

The trouble shooter refers to 'Write Anywhere',
and 'Handwriting' on the language bar, and then to
the 'Write Anywhere' or 'Writing Pad' toolbars, but I can
not see these icons or toolbars.

I've gone through the install process, checked the
regional and language settings, and taken all the other
steps mentioned earlier with no success.

I can handwrite in the TIP, and that is converted to text
and inserted correctly into the word document, but I can't
find any way to persuade handwriting to convert to text
directly within word.

I'm using an Acer C110 tablet, with SP2 installed.

Any other insights?

Re: Handwriting in Word

Do you have Handwriting (option during original setup) installed?

Handwriting in Word

I note from the help in the language bar that it discusses
installing handwriting recognition for MS Office XP. I've
got MS Office Professional 2003 - could that it be that
the handwriting feature is note supported in Office 2003?
Doesn't seem likely...

Re: Handwriting in Word

You need to have installed it when you installed Office 2003, Andrew. If
you don't recall doing that, go into Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs
and tap the Microsoft Office entry. It will allow you to add additional
features, where you should select Custom and then Add the Handwriting.

Re: Handwriting in Word

Have already been down this route - it appears to add the
handwriting option successfully.

In Word, I can see and access toolbars for Ink Comments,
Ink Annotations, Ink Drawing and Writing. But can only get
handwriting to convert to text by entering thro' the TIP.

In the Regional and Language options, Languages Tab,
Details, when I attempt to Add, the Handwriting
Recognition option is shown, but grayed out and not
accesible. According to the Language Tool Bar help, this
means the Handwriting Option is not installed.

The only discrepancy I can see is that the help refers to
Office XP, and I have Office 2003 Pro.

Re: Handwriting in Word

I agree the Help is incorrect, in fact have communicated that with the
Office team at Microsoft. An updated Help is supposed to be on the way at
some point. That's one down.

As for converting, there are a few steps to that. If you used the
Handwriting Toolbar to write directly into Word (without using the TIP),
then on the Ink Drawing and Writing Toolbar, tab the little white arrow
(Select Objects) and drag around the Ink you wish recognized.

When you've selected what you want converted to text, right-click your
selected area and choose Copy Ink as Text. Then place the cursor where you
want to put the Text, right-click again and select Paste.

In the long run, if your object is to Ink with the final objective being
text, it is easier to use the Tablet Input Panel.

MUCH easier. I find Word's handling of Ink to still be missing something. I
think what I really want is a transparent layer on top so that it just acts
like a piece of paper. It tries to do that now, but is only somewhat
successful.

Re: Handwriting in Word

With all due respect.....

The only reason I invested in a tablet pc was the Write Anywhere feature. I
sit in a lot of meetings and take copious notes (part of my profession) which
I want translated into text as I go. Prior to SP2, Write Anywhere worked
great! It was a huge productivity booster for me. The TIP feature does not
do it for me at all. I am now back to typing my notes. If I had wanted to
do that, I could have purchased a much lower cost laptop.

Is there any way to go back to the prior version of handwriting recognition
so that I can get back to the Write Anywhere feature?

A blunt answer: No. However, you might be interested in looking at a nifty
little program called OrangeGuava Desktop from http://www.orangeguava.com/
which extends the Windows shell in some marvelous ways. It works nicely
with XP SP2 and the Tablet PC Edition 2005.

A blunt response: stupid. OrangeGuava Desktop is "nifty" but doesn't do
the simple thing that we paid for when buying these tablets. I was
completely dumbfounded that the Write Anywhere feature was taken away in
SP 2. Why would MS take such an obvious step backward like that? Very,
very frustrating to have my 4 week old Tablet PC 2005 Edition broken by
the service pack.

Re: Handwriting in Word

Exactly, Gary. Write Anywhere was literally the deal maker that got me
to put down the $$$ for a TabletPC. A few weeks later, the "upgrade"
blows that away. Very frustrating.

Re: Handwriting in Word

Sorry it isn't what you wish. I cannot possibly answer for Microsoft's
decision making, but I can say I was very, very opposed to removal of Write
Anywhere at first myself. And used much more description language in
reference than you have. 8-)

However, as I worked with it over the first four or five days and suddenly
realized how much less time it was taking to enter things, how much more
organized I was with the new Tablet Input Panel and the context recognition
(like the proper smart buttons available in Internet Explorer), and how much
easier it was. Plus I felt I had a bonus of not losing as much screen space
to the TIP unless I really wanted it on-screen.

Re: Handwriting in Word

Hey Chris,

Okay, well I'm slowly ... slowly warming up to this thing for the
reasons you mention. After adjusting some of the input delays to match
my style and pace of use, I think that if the context recognition were
completely reliable, I might be willing to move forward. What happens
in my case is that the context TIP will appear in a field for a second
or two and if not selected, it goes away never to be seen again -
forcing me to pull up the full docked TIP. Sounds like we all agree that
Write Anywhere should at least be left in as an option for those who
want it, even is turned off by default. At the very least, turn it into
a Power Toy for those who really, really prefer that feature.

All this said, it's very impressive that I've written all of this by
hand and only about 5 or 6 corrections despite my sloppiest handwriting!

Re: Handwriting in Word

Awesome! The TIP disappearing, or are you talking about the TIP Access icon
(floating icon) disappearing? Keep the pen near the surface of the screen,
or else it does disappear. As for the "timing" issue, you can set it not to
insert anything until you tap the Insert button. That's the way I run it,
and can go five to nine different lines of handwriting (depending on
landscape or portrait mode) and take a look at all the words prior to
inserting. Without the timer set, you can even correct individual letters
within words as you spot them. Just keep the pen near the surface. 8-)

Re: Handwriting in Word

the floaty thingy is flaky in firefox but there's another thread
discussing the floating tip. if using thunderbird for newsreader just
put "firefox" in the 'Subject or Sender' box. Viola! : )
