| Problem with Word 2003 and handwritten text I just installed Tablet PC 2005 and I cannot determine how to use handwriting recognition within Word 2003. I can enter handwritten text into the Tablet Input Panel on the bottom of the screen and it will convert my handwriting to text. Is there a way to enter handwritten text anywhere in the Word screen and have it converted to text as I type? I would like to make full use of the Word screen instead of being limited to the small panel on the bottom Thanks |

| Re: Problem with Word 2003 and handwritten text Yes, for the best information, look to Help in Office for Handwriting. You first need to have Handwriting installed with Office for the applications to use it. Then, within Word in your case, you need to enable Ink Drawing and Writing under View/Toolbars. The Word Help has excellent examples of what you can do with the Office version of Handwriting. -- Chris H. | Re: Problem with Word 2003 and handwritten text Chris, Thanks but that didn't solve the problem. The only options I have on the ink drawing tool bar are: Drawing Eraser Select Object Line Color Line Style I don't have anything that will allow me to recognize handwriting and/or convert to text. | Re: Problem with Word 2003 and handwritten text Chris, One other issue that will impact this. The only option I have available in shared features is the speech recognition. The handwriting option does not appear. I am using Tablet PC 2005. | Re: Problem with Word 2003 and handwritten text You probably need to install it from your Office package, Glenn. Go into Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs and find the listing for Microsoft Office (version) and select it and then tap the Change button. Then select Add or Remove Features, followed by the Next button. Put a check mark in "Choose advanced customization of applications" and then tap the Next button. Under Office Shared Features, you will need to expand the listing by tapping the + sign, then select the Microsoft Handwriting Component. Follow through with the rest of the adding process after that (it may require your original CD). -- Chris H. I did. According to the setup it's already installed, but there's no handwriting or language bar. And there's no handwriting buttons in the ink drawing writing bar. If I use the pen button to write ink in a drawing canvas, I can copy that then paste as typed text, but when I right click there's no recognize option that the help talks about. I tried removing and re-installing the Microsoft Handwriting Component, but that didn't work either. Is it worth reinstalling all of Office? |

| Re: Problem with Word 2003 and handwritten text Perhaps you're not going far enough? In Word, when you go to View/Toolbars are you seeing any of three entries: Ink Annotations, Ink Comments and Ink Drawing and Writing. You should have all three entries available, and must tap those to enable the toolbars, which will then "float." There is no "handwriting" button, only choices of your pen size, etc. There's a pretty good troubleshooter in Help if you do a Search for "Troubleshoot handwriting recognition." -- Chris H. | Re: Problem with Word 2003 and handwritten text Yes. And I've gone through the install process twice with the same results. I still don't have any other options on the toolbar. Would you suggest that I reinstall Office 2003 and try again? | Re: Problem with Word 2003 and handwritten text Before doing anything, would you go into Control Panel/Regional and Language Settings/Languages tab and then tap the Details button for the Installed Services to verify the Advanced Text Services includes Tablet PC Correction, Tablet PC Correct for Windows Journal and Tablet PC Text Insertion. The Tablet PC Correction is an Office item, and should be installed. If it isn't there, you could try a "Repair" install from within Add or Remove Programs, Glenn. That might do the trick without needing to go through the whole process again. If that doesn't fix it, I'd suggest you post in one of the Office newsgroups where the MVPs who deal with Office issues all the time. The language versions in Region and Language Settings and Office both match, correct? And you're seeing the proper entries in Region and Language Settings as I described for the Languages tab? What anti-virus software are you running? If it is anything Norton (Symantec) could you please try totally disabling or temporarily uninstalling it, then try the Repair on Office again? -- Chris H.
