| SP2 Failure I have been trying to get SP2 installed since last week. It fails halfway through giving me a simple access denied message. I am the administrator. I have an HP TC1100 with a gig of ram. Called Microsoft Tech support and my case ahs been elevated but am awaiting contact again to see what is up. anyone here heard of this issue? Thought I'd at least ask. Thanks, Mike Lauretti |

I am using a Toshiba m200 with XP Tablet (and the prereleases of SP2 installed). I also get an "access denied" on ntdll.dll in system32 and SP2 fails. I have yet no clue how to solve this (and I do not like to uninstall the old SP2 just because I would have to remove quite a lot of software, too). Bye, Andreas -- Please remove '-reject-' from the mail address when answering by PM (SPAM protection). Bitte '-reject-' aus der Mailadresse bei einer Antwort mit PM entfernen. |

| Re: SP2 Failure I've been trying to install SP2 on my tablet, a Toshiba M200. I have a colleague also trying to install SP2 on a HP tablet. We have the same problem. When installing it gets to the part that says starting processes and then stops and gives an error message: Title reads: Service Pack 2 Setup Error Red X An error in updating your system has occurred. Select 'OK' to undo the changes that have been made. OK button. No other choice but to hit ok then it rolls back the install. Afterwords it gives this message: Title: Service Pack 2 Setup Error Red X Service Pack 2 installation did not complete. Windows XP has been partially updated and may not work properly. OK Button Then the machine(s) reboot They do seem to work ok, but we would like to get SP2 installed. Any suggestions? I'd also recommend making sure you've totally disabled any anti-virus program or third-party software firewall you're running. Run a thorough anti-virus check of the systems, too. | Re: SP2 Failure Hi Chris, Neither machine had previous version of XP sp2. Anti-virus is disabled, no thrid party fire-wall or screen savers. All virus scans came up clean, we used the ones recommended by MS. All vendor supplied driver updates installed as well as BIOS. We've downloaded the sp2 executable as well hoping to get a more defined error message. It's strange it goes through installing all files, updating registry, and during "Running processes after install" we get the errors shown in previous e-mail. We've been searching through documents trying to find anything else. I've also tried creating a local user only and adding to Administrators group to install sp2, thinking it may be something with domain accounts. This did not work, same messages as before. I guess I'm out of ideas on this and looking for more. Thanks, Lucy "Chris H." wrote: > Were either of these machines running a previous version of XP SP2? If so, > I would uninstall. | Re: SP2 Failure Have you tried using Safe Mode? Check in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer and tap the Application listing in the left pane to see if either a yellow triangle with an exclamation point or a red circle with a white X is shown in the right pane around the time of the installation attempt. This might give a clue to the issue. If it is a driver involved, Safe Mode will eliminate those until the install is complete and the final boot takes place. At that point, you could then reinstall the driver. -- Chris H. | Re: SP2 Failure The good news is it's now installed. I ended up getting the new version of Tablet PC 2005 CD's and installed as an upgrade and it worked and it installed SP2. The (kind of) bad news is that it wasn't a driver. In fact I ended up looking at the svcpack.log file to see where it was failing. The installation failed when trying to add a dll to the .Net 1.0 framework GAC. Anyway, just thought I would pass the information along and thank you for all the suggestions. | Re: SP2 Failure Chris, I have had the same issue when installing SP2 on my Gateway M275. After half way through the installation, it failed and gave me an Access Denied. Here is the text from the svcpack.log file: 1750.016: DoRegistryUpdates:SetupInstallFromInfSection Failed for Tablet.Reg.Install: 0x5 1750.016: DoInstallation:DoRegistryUpdates failed 1758.719: Unregistration of sprecovr successful 1760.291: Access is denied. | Re: SP2 Failure 8-) So do I, John. What is open and running at the time you attempted the installation? Is this a downloaded SP2 or via Windows Update? Were you in regular running mode or Safe Mode at the time of install? It sounds as if an anti-virus program is running and trying to protect against changes to the system (which are numerous with SP2). -- Chris H. Always kept up with the automatic updates, but was warned by my companies IT dept not to load SP2. Now it appears I do need it, and can't finish the download. Can't find anything specific to this problem on the net or with Windows. Ordered the update on CD. Have you ever received a reply or solved the problem yourself? |
