| Penabled Loss after Hibernation Hello. I just got a Tecra M7 this week, and I've been eager to use Paint Shop Pro and the GIMP on it. I was disappointed to discover they didn't detect the pressure-sensitive pen until I read that I needed to install a Wacom driver. I got it from here: http://www.wacom.com/tabletpc/driver.cfm At first it worked great. Then it mysteriously stopped working. I eventually figured out that it only works when the computer is rebooted, and ceases working after hibernation and resume. When it stops working I mean it loses pressure sensitivity in Paint Shop and GIMP, but still functions for handwriting and pointing and clicking. On one occasion the pen ceased to have any function at all (it didn't even move the cursor) when I resumed from hibernation, but it was working again after a reboot. Any suggestions? |

| Re: Penabled Loss after Hibernation This is a bit of a puzzlement. Do you have PSP and GIMP open when you're using Hibernation? Does it make a difference? The only problem I've noted regarding Hibernation is if you happen to mistakenly hit the Shift Key before entering Hibernation with a password on the account, which would give you all CAPS when you return from Hibernation. -- Chris H. Can you tell me if GIMP now works OK with the tablet rotated into Portrait mode? I tried installing it on my Tablet sometime last year, and although it worked fine in landscape, the pen movement in portrait mode was inverted. Apparently GIMP uses the legacy Wintab API in the Wacom drivers and it doesn't support rotation, whereas most Tablet software now uses the HID API which does. I haven't seen any traffic on the GIMP support forums that suggest its been fixed. It would be nice to hear that it has. Then I will try again. Regards -- Peter R Cook |

| Re: Penabled Loss after Hibernation I'm afraid I do have the same problem. I posted a question in comp.graphics.apps.gimp about it. I'll see what response I get. Right now I'm working around it by always switching to landscape for GIMP. The gravity-sensitive rotate button is quite helpful for switching back and forth a lot, but it's not intuitive at all! I suppose the tutorial probably explains it, but I just skipped that. I should also note that I can't get the GIMP input devices dialog to work. As soon as I switch away from the puck, the panel in the centre with the axis controls goes blank, and doesn't come back no matter which input device I select to configure. I have to make changes direct to the settings file. Invalid wrote: > In message <1168045028.613736.139510@q40g2000cwq.googlegroups .com>, > Weeble <clockworksaint******.com> writes > >Hello. | Re: Penabled Loss after Hibernation It looks like it does make a difference if they're open. I'd need to test it more to be sure, but it seems okay if I shut them all before hibernation, but if any of them is open, after hibernation the pen is back to behaving like a simple mouse again, for both PSP (which is version 8, by the way) and for GIMP. This persists even if I close them down and re-open them. From this I'd guess that the service is dying if it's in use during hibernation... ....okay, I just went and checked. If I restart the "TabletService" service, the functions recover. Chris H. wrote: > This is a bit of a puzzlement. Do you have PSP and GIMP open when you're > using Hibernation? | Re: Penabled Loss after Hibernation Good information, thanks. I'm going to bounce this off some folks and see if there's a solution. But before I do, just to be clear, are you saying after Hibernation, (1) everything works normally except PSP and GIMP, but restarting TabletService brings back the functions in those two programs, or (2) Hibernation is causing loss of pen all the way around? If it is #1, I believe that is going to be an issue where the two programs aren't picking up the right "signal" on resumption, and the solution of closing them before Hibernation (other than the programs authors waking them up to pen usage with updates) is the best you're going to do. -- Chris H. (1) is closest. I *think* now that the behaviour is like this: If I hibernate and resume without PSP or GIMP running, everything is okay. If I start them, they are okay. If I hibernate and resume while one of them is running, the pressure sensitivity disappears in those applications, and *stays gone*, even if I quit and restart those applications, until I restart the TabletService service. I believe there is a (potentially unrelated) problem that occasionally causes the pen to cease to function entirely upon resuming from hibernation, but this is not easily reproduceable - it has only happened to me twice so far. > If it is #1, I believe that is going to be an issue where the two programs > aren't picking up the right "signal" on resumption, and the solution of > closing them before Hibernation (other than the programs authors waking them > up to pen usage with updates) is the best you're going to do. It could be, but I would note that even if only one of them is running at hibernation, the other will also be unable to function until the service is restarted. Thanks for your help so far. |

If not then you may be looking at another bug in the Wintab API of the Wacom pressure sensitive drivers. From your description it sounds as if the Wintab API fails to recover properly from hibernation if any program is "attached". Restarting Tablet services resets the API. I suspect this is back to Wacom for a fix - if they are interested. Regards -- Peter R Cook |

If I jostle the touch-pad while drawing with the stylus in PSP, I get a very squiggly line as the two fight to position the mouse cursor. In GIMP, jostling the the touch-pad while drawing has no effect on the line I draw. (Also, it might be entirely in my head, but GIMP feels sharper, as though it's following my movements slightly quicker.) > If not then you may be looking at another bug in the Wintab API of the > Wacom pressure sensitive drivers. > > From your description it sounds as if the Wintab API fails to recover > properly from hibernation if any program is "attached". | Re: Penabled Loss after Hibernation Weeble wrote: > It does, but it would appear to simply be using the mouse cursor > position. To follow up on this, I'm now pretty sure that PSP8 just uses the mouse cursor position for tablet input, in contrast to GIMP which can pick up on movements smaller than a screen-pixel. This becomes pretty obvious if you draw something very tiny when zoomed out to a factor like 12%. When you zoom back in in PSP8 you can see you've drawn only horizontal, vertical and 45 degree lines in a grid pattern, whereas in GIMP you have smooth, detailed lines. |

I can get it back by rebooting, or by going into device manager and disabling and re-enabling the Wacom device.
