Booting DVD from M200 In the past few days I have gotten a few Emails asking how to boot from a CD using the Toshiba M200. The only thing I can say is that I was able to get it to boot using the Toshiba External USB CD-RS/DVD-ROM Drive, model number PA3352u-1CD2 that I purchased with the system (I believe it is the same drive that comes with the M205). I was able to do this by plugging it into the USB port that is closest to the power cord on the M200. For some reason I was not able to get it to work in the other USB port. Then, when the computer is booting, and you are taken to the screen with the icons at the bottom to represent the bootable devices, I used the arrow keys to select the CD icon. I seem to recall having to do something in the BIOS also. I think I changed the order which the M200 looks for bootable devices although I do not think that has anything to do with it. I am sorry, but other than these instructions I am afraid I will not be able to help. -- Gary A. Bushey SPS MVP bushey@mindspring.com

Re: Booting DVD from M200 Works with a Targa external DVD as well, and I didn't have to do anything extra. The Targa I have has two different cables attached, one a pass through, and one a straight plug in. Wouldn't boot off the pass through, but would off the straight end. Default BIOS settings seem to be fine for this to work, except that you _do_ need to set the boot order to make sure it looks at a CD first -- that can be done by going into the BIOS on boot, or using the Control Panel -> Toshiba HWSetup applet. -- Charlie. I too used the Targus - but I didn't like the klunky cable, so I used a normal cable from another CDRW/DVD drive I had and it too worked fine in the plug closest to the power adapter jack. Also, you can just hit the F12 key during the boot to get a "hot menu" that will give you the choice of all boot options, including booting from SD, without having to change bios settings at all - the F12 menu will override whatever is set by default. -- John

Re: Booting DVD from M200 Ah, good. I can NEVER remember what key does what on Toshiba laptops. You'd think I'd have it down by now -- I'm on my 4th or 5th Toshiba. But I still forget. OTOH, I love being able to set the BIOS from within Windows. -- Charlie. Since I rebuilt mine from scratch, I think that may have been one of the things I didn't get reinstalled. Which Toshiba app does that? I'll have to grab it and install it since it doesn't appear to be installed now. -- John

Re: Booting DVD from M200 Good. There are actually a couple of fairly useful Toshiba apps you'll want to make sure you get, including their power saver app -- it's actually much more configurable than the built in Windows stuff. One of the first things I do on any Toshiba is to download all the latest versions, rename them to something that makes sense, and stick them all in a folder on the D: drive called \source. That way, I can get to them even if I have to wipe the C: drive. Of course, that also means I have to re-partition, but that's simply SOP. :) -- Charlie. I have two files I use for rebuilding from scratch - one is "installed at base.zip" and has all the drivers and utilities for the machine, and are all that's installed in my "base image". The other is "most installs.zip" and has all the rest of the programs and such that I don't have on CD. Trouble is that I don't always get into all the built in apps - and some I remove because I never use them. So sometimes when I'm hunting down something, it's a search to see if it's one of the ones that made my "keep" list or not. :) -- John
