| UNDOCKing TIPS I have just installed SP2 and I now unable to undock TIPS. If I select UNDOCK, it hides and when I redisplay it, it goes back to being top docked or bottom docked depending on what was selected before I tried to undock the thing. Any ideas? Frank |

| RE: UNDOCKing TIPS Frank, This behaviour (the tip disappears when undocked) is how it is supposed to work. When it is "hidden" a small TIP icon should appear when the focus of the cursor is in an area of the screen that accepts text input. Touch the floating icon and the TIP should reappear. Check out the options button (looks like a gray gear) and you can set the way you want that undocked TIP behave (appear on hover or appear when you touch the icon etc.) "Frank BRadley" wrote: > I have just installed SP2 and I now unable to undock > TIPS. | RE: UNDOCKing TIPS Forgot to mention, there are a few programs where the undocked TIP does not work as expected, so to eliminate that as a issue, try it in NotePad or IE (in the Address Bar, or a text entry area). | RE: UNDOCKing TIPS Ok that is a big change, it worked with NOTEPAD and the other applications. I was so accustomed to always seeing the entire TIPS panel even when the desktop was visible. I love the way it hides now in the application!! | Re: UNDOCKing TIPS Frank, and for anyone else reading this, the expected behavior when you Undock the Tablet Input Panel is for it to disappear. It will not appear on-screen if you're using a keyboard or mouse. However, when in the Undock position and the pen is within about 3/4 of an inch of the Tablet screen, the small TIP Access button ("floating" TIP icon) will appear when you are in tap a text input area with the pen. If you remove the pen away from the screen, the TIP Access button will disappear. Same thing with the opened Tablet Input Panel, if nothing has been written in it. Don't expect the Tablet Input Panel to remain open for you if you pause to scratch your chin with your hand that has the pen in it unless you've already written a few words. 8-) The design - and "expected behavior" - is for the TIP Access button in Undock position not to be on-screen unless the pen is in use. With the Tablet Input Panel open by selecting one of the Dock positions - and anchored either top or bottom of the screen - the TIP Access button will not be available even if you're navigating the screen with a pen. -- Chris H. | Re: UNDOCKing TIPS I am one of the anyone else's who agrees with another recent post about no longer being able to undock and resize TIP. I would suggest that the "expected behavior" is for undocking to work just as it did prior to SP2. For me, and I suspect many others, losing that ability may promt me to go back to the previous OS (prior to SP2). Why did you not consider that many of us would use TIP that way, since you obviously thought it was important prior to SP2? Could this not have been an undocked option in addition to "appear near the insertion piont"? The latter option does not work well for me in the applications I use, frequently entering strings into pop up dialogues. The floating TIP hides command buttons on the forms. I have to repeatedly move it out of the way. Even if you allowed resizing of TIP while docked, my computing experience would be enhanced. | Re: UNDOCKing TIPS Greg, first I'd like to correct an apparent assumption that the MVPs who answer posts in this newsgroup are somehow "Microsoft." We're not, and do this on a voluntary basis. You might be interested in information about the MVP program: http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Now, second, I'd like to say I agreed with your issues when the testing first started with the new TIP. Until about the third or fourth day, and then I absolutely didn't miss the Write Anywhere "feature" at all. It wasn't even in my mind to look for it. The overall increase in behavior I've found very acceptable, and wouldn't want to go back to the original. The new TIP can be moved wherever you wish, just like moving a new email or response to a newsgroup post slightly out of the way when it covers something you want to see. As for resizing, the new TIP does it automatically as you complete one line, opening a new one for you. Keep in mind, too, that you can write strings you use over and over again, and add them as part of your dictionary which will cut down on your input time. -- Chris H. | UNDOCKing TIPS I am adding my voice to this problem as well. The UNDOCK or moving version of TIP does exist and shows up when you let the pen hover....but starting the TIP from the bar does not allow undocking! Hopefully, someone at MS can help with this as I hate wasting large amount of screen space with the docked version. | Re: UNDOCKing TIPS That is the design decision from Microsoft. When you start the TIP from the Taskbar, it reverts from the Undock position to being Docked at either the top or bottom of your screen. If you don't want to lost the Undock setting, simply tap the little floating TIP Access icon that's on your screen. Select Undock from the Tablet Input Panel Options menu, and the TIP Access icon will only show on-screen when your pen is within about 3/4 of an inch of the screen. If you're using a keyboard or the Touchpad or mouse for navigation, it won't show. As soon as you have the pen close to the screen, with the cursor in a text input position (email, newsgroup post, URL in Internet Explorer, password location, etc., etc.), the little icon will show. You can tap that, and the TIP will appear. Finish what you're doing and move the pen away, and the TIP disappears. -- Chris H. | Re: UNDOCKing TIPS Thanks Chris for volunteering your time and advice. I'm willing to give it some time (actually I have little choice). I'm sure I'll eventually become accustomed to the new TIP undocked behavior, however I remain puzzled as to why the previoius undocked choice was eliminated. | Re: UNDOCKing TIPS 8-) Apparently a design choice, Greg. I don't know, but can tell you after using it a while I wouldn't want to go back to the old one. Sort of like Write Anywhere. I argued vehemently against that change, but after the first three or four days of using the "floating" TIP I wouldn't want it any other way. -- Chris H.
