UGH! SP2 Hosed My M1300

I have a Gateway branded M1300. Downloaded SP2 from Microsoft (network
install). Used this to successfully upgrade my desktop computer. No
problems. Then ran the SP2 update on my M1300. Went through the entire
process and I clicked "Finish" to complete the upgrade and reboot my
computer.

Upon reboot, the computer goes through the normal routine, plays the startup
sound, and then BSOD! The text on the BSOD flashes very quickly, but I
photographed it. Basically, I am getting a BAD_POOL_HEADER and then a bunch
of text about how to correct (useless), then

Technical information:
*** STOP: (bunch of hex)

Beginning dump of physical memory
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further
assistance.

This reboot cycle (reboot, start booting, BSOD, reboot, etc.) cycles
continuously.

HELP! Is my only resort to reload from the Gateway provided rescue CD? If
so, how do I do this? Do I need to go purchase an external USB CD-ROM,
connect it to the M1300, and change the BIOS to boot from CD?

Can anyone please provide some guidance to an incredibly frustrated user?

Thanks in advance.

David

Re: UGH! SP2 Hosed My M1300

Can you go into Safemode? (F8 during boot). If so, all is not lost, you
just need to find the offending driver or files... If not, then the only
way to bring the system back is from the Rescue CD.

Just a general note: Blue screen like this usually is hardware related
(usually a bad hardware or a bad device driver). In your case, it is likely
that MS's SP2 has replaced a custom device driver that come with your system
(do you have any special hardware?). You might need to restore to the old
driver for this.

Good luck... Looks like you will be busy for a while.

Re: UGH! SP2 Hosed My M1300

Yes, I can get to Safe mode, though unsure how to proceed from there.
Advice on next steps?

Though ONLY thing I have added recently are the Intel PROset wireless
drivers for the onboard 2100 mini-pci wireless adapter. These were obtained
from the Motion Computing Web site.

FYI, the CD that came with the system is not labelled Rescue CD. It is the
WinXP Tablet OS CD plus there is a drivers CD.

Re: UGH! SP2 Hosed My M1300

I saw something similar with my 1300, David. The problem is a failure to
write the proper drivers for the motherboard to the system. The only way I
fixed it was to install fresh with the CDs, then install SP2, and everything
is fine. Of course, I had several beta builds on there previously, so
things may have gotten goofed up.

Just to confirm before doing anything rash like formatting and reinstalling,
contact Motion's support telephone line and ask their opinion. They're
really quite good.

Re: UGH! SP2 Hosed My M1300

I was able to get into Safe Mode.

How do I determine what the problem is?

Shall I just go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall SP2?

Thanks.

David, following up my own post: If you can get in with Safe Mode, use CD2
which has the drivers on it and reinstall all those that you can. I
couldn't even get that far (but, again I believe beta builds were to blame).
Perhaps you'll have better success.

Re: UGH! SP2 Hosed My M1300

Chris,

Two CD's came with the M1300 from Gateway:

1. Applications and Drivers Tablet PC Version 1.1 R1
2. Gateway Operating Systm Windows XP - Professional Tablet PC Edition
Version 1.0

Let me make sure I understand what you are suggesting:

1. Go buy an external USB CD-ROM drive. Plug it into the M1300
2. Put the Applications and Drivers CD in the drive.
3. Boot the M1300 back into Safe mode
4. Navigate to the CD-ROM and attempt to load as many drivers as possible.
5. Reboot

Also - you suggest calling Motion. Will they assist even though it is a
Gateway branded model?

Chris - alternatively from my last post, should I just go to add/remove and
uninstall SP2? If so, will I be back in business? And is there something I
can do in advance of installing SP2 again so it doesn't fail?

Re: UGH! SP2 Hosed My M1300

There apparently are some issues on certain machines with SP2, but before
doing all the uninstall/install routine, take a look in Device Manager and
see if you see any "banged out" drivers in the standard "Device by Type"
listing (under the drop-down View menu). Then take a look at View/Resources
by Type, which will show in a lot of the motherboard resources by expanding
the + next to Input/output (IO).

If you see nothing that is hindering the operation, since you have the
"network" version, try installing it over itself (but make sure you've
disabled/uninstalled any AV program or third-party firewall you may be
using). And, nope, you would need to go with Compaq support on a telephone
call.

I would believe, though, if you're okay in Device Manager, running the SP2
install from Safe Mode would repair any problems.

Re: UGH! SP2 Hosed My M1300

Chris - thanks for your patience, but I am confused.

Device Manager shows no ! items. The Realtek RTL8139/810X Family Fast
Ethernet NIC is X'd out however. Also, there are WAY more entries in Network
Adapters than I ever remember seeing before:

Direct Parallel
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter - Packet Scheduler
Miniport
Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter
Realtek RTL8139/810X Family Fast Ethernet NIC (X'd out)
Realtek RTL8139/810X Family Fast Ethernet NIC - Packet Scheduler Miniport
WAN Miniport (IP)
WAN Miniport (IP) - Packet Scheduler Miniport
WAN Miniport (L2TP)
WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
WAN Miniport (PPTP)

I don't recall all of these adapters prior to installing SP2.

What exactly do you mean "try installing it over itself"? I installed SP2
using wireless LAN to connect to shared CD-ROM on this desktop PC. With the
Tablet in Safe Mode, that is not an option, right? I would still have to go
buy an external USB CD-ROM drive in order to do that, correct? Anything
special I need to look out for when buying that?

Re: UGH! SP2 Hosed My M1300

Ok - I now realize that I can boot in Safe Mode with Network support. Did
that and am now reinstalling SP2 on top of previous install, while in Safe
Mode.

Prior to that, I tried to uninstall the Intel PROset LAN drivers by
Add/Remove, but that process does not work in Safe Mode.

Finger crossed.

Re: UGH! SP2 Hosed My M1300

No such luck. Same problem.

Now going to boot in Safe Mode and reload all drivers from original CD
provided by Gateway.

Argh! Driver install utility won't run in Safe Mode.

I am now going to uninstall SP2!

Re: UGH! SP2 Hosed My M1300

Hopefully, that's going to fix your issues, David.

You have way more devices showing that I. Under Device by type/Network
adapters, I have only a 1394 Net Adapter, Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B
Mini PCI Adapter, MAC Bridge Miniport and the Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI
Fast Ethernet NIC.

Re: UGH! SP2 Hosed My M1300

Perhaps more adapters are listed in Safe Mode?

Also - thinking some of those adapters were listed erroneously, I tried to
remove the Microsoft Tun adapter. XP said no, it was required to boot the
system.

Right now the 1300 is on the process on uninstalling SP2. If that works, I
may reload all the Gateway drivers and try SP2 again. But only if I am
feeling really brave (or stupid).

Re: UGH! SP2 Hosed My M1300

Well, SP2 uninstalled properly. Also - Microsoft Error Report indicated that
there was a Video Driver error. Not sure if related to SP2, but will try and
figure it out.

For now, I'm going to resist reloading SP2.

Thanks for the help.
