Averatec C3500 System Restore Problem

I have had a C3500 from Costco for about 3 weeks. So far I am pleased
with it overall, but it has one very irritating problem that I would
like to determine the cause of. I have to do a system restore very
frequently when I turn the unit on from an off and sometimes a
hibernate state. This can happen several times a day.

It dosn't seem to matter if the unit is hot or cold.

It doesn't seem to matter what the last restore point was. In other
words, after installing any software, if there are no problems with
the installation (generally there are not), it will run fine until I
restart the computer. If I restore back to the last restore point,
that seems to work (it will then boot). I have had no problems getting
into SAFE mode to do the restore.

I am wondering if it is just this unit, or is it a configuration or
design problem? How can I find out more about why it won't boot?

When it doesn't boot, it comes up to just before the login screen and
shows a Windows logo screen and says something like "Windows is
initializing" and just hangs there.

Hi,
Have you contact Averatec regarding the reliability of the C3500? It sounds
like it may be a hardware problem.

Re: Averatec C3500 System Restore Problem

Hi,

I had the same problem - the trick is to hit alt tab when you reach
that "Windows is Starting up" blue screen of life screen, and dismiss
the pesky dialog in the background. That takes you to the login
screen.

I have a different problem while resuming from hibernation. The
machine freezes up at the end of the progress bar in the Resuming
Windows (black and white) screen. Cant find anyway to solve it without
force rebooting the machine, and selecting "delete system restore
data..." option. Any suggestions?

What does their support section say about your issue? It sure sounds like a
hardware issue. Are your drivers all current?

Hi, Chris.

Could you send me a link to their support documentation that addresses
this issue? I was unable to find any help there on this particular
problem.

I don't have a file of the information, Darren. I'd suggest you look in the
documents that came with your system for the contact information.

Re: Averatec C3500 System Restore Problem

The Alt-Tab appears to do the trick. Is this part of a normal logon
procedure? If it is, I have never seen anything on it. I would like to
change the configuration and override it, if it is possible. I would
like to go directly to the welcome screen without taking any action.

(Sorry for the delay. Too much time on the road!)

Thanks,
Jim

Averatec has posted a patch on their site to fix the issue:

Re: Averatec C3500 System Restore Problem

Gents-
My folks recently aquried an Averatec C3500 at my reccomendation and I
found that they had a login problem suspiciously like the one you've
described here. Here's the gist - Averatec has apparently packaged
their operating systems in such a fashion that Windows tries to log
onto the local administrator's account automatically at boot up.
That's all well and good, unless you happened to set a password on the
administrative account during the first boot (when you first took the
system out of the box). If you did, the auto logon to the admin
account will hang, resulting in the problem you mentioned, with Windows
trying to log in but unable to proceed to the administrator's desktop
(why it does not simply fail and prompt you for the password as it
should, I can't say - but, selah - there it is). So - here is what you
do to stop that nonsense from happening.
1.
Click Start, click Run, and type "control userpasswords2" - without
the quotes.

2.
Check the "Users must enter a username and password to use this
computer" check box.

3.
Click Apply.

4. Close the dialog.

Why Averatec decided to set auto logon on these sytems is beyond me,
but all windows accounts should have passwords - ESPECIALLY the local
administrators account. Manage your account passwords by right
clicking on "My Computer" and selecting "Manage" then in the hierarchy
of items on the left select "Local Users and Groups" - now on the
right, right click on each of the accounts you would like to set a
password on, and select "set Password". Type each password twice to
confirm and close all dialogs. Reboot your C500 - you should have
normal boot ups now.

Hope this was helpful. Happy Computing.

-Grendel
