SP2 and Toshiba Protege m200

I use my tablet both at work(as a secondary comp) and at home(VPN access).
In both configs it uses DHCP to get an IP, at home its from a linksys
cable/dsl router. I just noticed that when I right-click My Network Places
and get properties to look at my IP config(need to make a small change) none
of the connections is there? Also, when I am at home I can't ping my linksys
router sometimes, even though it is getting a DHCP address from it. Am I
missing something with the new Firewall/ICS?

Jason

Re: SP2 and Toshiba Protege m200

You may be missing the use of Wireless Zero Configuration for 802.11
wireless adapters. Take a look in Control Panel/Administrative
Tools/Services and see if WZC is turned on and running.

WZC is on and running. I may turn it off for the hell of it and see what
happens.

Hmmm. When you right-click for the properties of your LAN icon, in Network
Connections, then select the Wireless Networks tab, is there a check mark in
Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings?

Re: SP2 and Toshiba Protege m200

when I need to check for connectivity I open the command prompt and use the
ipconfig /all command. Since you're using dhcp for setup some of the
information you might want to examine might not be there. With the growth of
wireless (in my neighborhood a lot)) it's not unusual to occasionally miss
the dhcp broadcast and need to release the auto address that MS assigns
(this is what kills the ability to ping the linksys, and inability to look
at the network neighborhood). Another thing that kills the wireless is
having a 2.4ghz phone in the house.

You said Network Places, Jason. I presume you've created your LAN
connection in Network Connections? Which View setting are you using, and
have you tried another one? Try switching between List and Tiles, for
instance.

Re: SP2 and Toshiba Protege m200

When I went to add a new connection the only available devices were the IR
port and modem.

I tried a few different views with no luck.

I just removed Sp2 and my LAN and Wireless connections are showing up again.
Gonna try to reinstall Sp2 soon.

Re: SP2 and Toshiba Protege m200

Take a look in Device Manager, Jason. After you reinstall SP2, you should
only be seeing two entries under Network adapters - the Ethernet and
Wireless. Make sure the wireless is turned on (little toggle switch on the
left side when you have the keyboard available). Even though you may have
the 100 VE Network Connection, Fast Infrared Port and even your software
dial-up modem enabled with the wireless, it should function properly -
unless something has slipped to "bridge" mode. This should reveal that
condition when you open Network Connections, however.

If that's the case use a right-click and "Unbridge" to get rid of it.

Re: SP2 and Toshiba Protege m200

One of the things which I've seen in previous builds was it takes two or
three boots on the system sometimes to get everything straight. There are
an awful lot of changes made with SP2, and sometimes not everything kicks
in. 8-) Glad it is working, and may I suggest after perhaps a half-dozen
times you reboot or restart your machine, that you do a full system Defrag?
It'll run a lot better once defragged and once the Prefetch gets used to
your usage pattern.

Re: SP2 and Toshiba Protege m200

Well I tried again at home last night. Still no network. Gets a DHCP config,
but can't ping anything. I am wondering if the windows FW installed really
doesn't like having its IP switched on it(10.x.x.x. at work and 192.168.1.x
at home)

Is there a way to completly turn off the FW service?

Re: SP2 and Toshiba Protege m200

First I would not turn off the firewall, Jason. That would basically be
inviting problems into your system. There should be no problem switching
between LANs. Each one should be a separate configuration, and you should
be able to switch when either one is available.

If you go into Network Connections, right-click the icon representing
whatever connection you're on at the moment and then select Properties, when
you go to the Wireless Networks tab, are you seeing the two LANs in the
Preferred networks pane? They should properly be listed there. I would
highlight each and then click the Advanced button in the lower-right to make
sure they're set as Access point (infrastructure) networks only.

Also, when you have the issue, go to the Command Prompt (not Start/Run) and
type in "ipconfig" without the quotes. Can you verify that you're receiving
the correct IP assignments?
