| SP2 killed my ICS :o( Hello people I just installed SP2 onto my desktop and Toshiba Tablet PC. I turned off the MS Firewall on both machines, but can't browse the Internet from the Tablet PC (using ICS, which is set up on the desktop). The desktop is convinced that the Internet connection is shared, it's got the IP 192.168.0.1 and Subnet of 255.255.255.0, and I've given the Toshiba 192.168.0.2 and the same subnet. I can browse my shared folders, but not use the Internet from the Toshiba :o( Any ideas from anyone out there? Thanks Dave |

| Re: SP2 killed my ICS :o( If you assigned the IP address yourself (rather than allowing ICS to assign it) to the Toshiba, did you also assign the DNS addresses that the IP stack requires (to find things not on the local LAN) ? If you're going to do it manually make sure you copy the DNS settings from the primary link of the ICS server machine also. Here are some tips for troubleshooting ICS: 1. On the host computer, right click the local area network connection and click Status | Support | Details. It should show: IP Address: 192.168.0.1 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: none DNS Server = none 2. On the client computer, right click the local area network connection and click Status | Support | Details. It should show: IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255) Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 DNS Server = 192.168.0.1 or your ISP's DNS server 3. If #1 and #2 are right, open a command prompt window on the client and enter these lines. Each one should get four replies: ping 192.168.0.1 ping 216.239.39.99 ping google.com 4. If #1-#3 are right, enter these addresses in Internet Explorer on the client. They should both take you to the Google web page: http://216.239.39.99 http://google.com -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. | Re: SP2 killed my ICS :o( Hi all, Same problem here, after installing SP 2, the internet (ICS) does not work on the second (non host) PC any more. Ping from the client to the host works fine. All other settings are matching the settings as described above. Only when I deactivate the Windows Firewall for the NIC that is connectet to the internet, the client PC can correctly connect to the internet. Any sugestions, how to solve this problem? Thanks for any help! Henk |

| Re: SP2 killed my ICS :o( You may want to check your settings in Control Panel/Windows Firewall. If you have a check mark in "Don't allow exceptions" then you're blocking your own LAN machines. Also, click on the Exceptions tab in there to make sure you've got File and Printer Sharing enabled, then check the Advanced tab to see if you've enabled the Local Area Connection (or Wireless Network Connection, if wireless). -- Chris H. The client indeed is connected wireless to the ICS-host (Bluetooth). All checkboxes (Advance tab) are marked. Where and how can I enable the Local Area or Wireless network connection? As far as I see I only can mark and unmark the different NICH-interfaces (which ar all marked currently). Thanks for any sugestion! | Re: SP2 killed my ICS :o( Hi everyone I've followed all the suggestions given and they were much appreciated. Alas, I still can't get ICS working :oS It will be something in the way I am setting it up, I bet :o) One thing that I didn't mention was that I am using a wireless connection (built into the Tablet, a USB Wireless Adapter on the desktop and a USB modem on the desktop). The wireless kit is 802.11b. Is there anything else I can try? | Re: SP2 killed my ICS :o( Dave, I believe the concept of how this is supposed to take place may be a bit off target. Take a look at this Microsoft Knowledge Base article regarding a satellite Internet connection where a USB modem is installed: http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=MSbbn If you have incoming ISP service to the desktop, you need to share that via ICS from the desktop through a Network Interface Card to which you've connected a router/base station that is in Bridging Mode. You cannot have two wireless adapters talking to each other in this setup. They're just not built to do that. -- Chris H. | Re: SP2 killed my ICS :o( Has something changed in the way that ICS is handled under SP2? Previously, under SP1, I was able to run my Tablet, via wireless with the USB WiFI interface on the desktop, and share the internet (being provided through the USB ADSL modem). KB article 817461 describes how to configure a Microsoft Broadband Networking base station to work in a setup similar to Dave's. However the article neglects to mention that the base station isn't needed. A computer-to-computer wireless network, without a router or base station, is called an "ad hoc" network, and it should work fine in Dave's setup. Here are some articles on how to set it up: Ad Hoc Internet Sharing with Microsoft Windows XP http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Making the Wireless Home Network Connection in Windows XP Without a Router http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...02april08.mspx -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. | Re: SP2 killed my ICS :o( I apologize that this is a bit OT for the group, but you might have a quick answer on this. (And I am asking about something I'm trying to do on my M200, so it is tablet related. :) ) I often work at places like Panera, that have hotspots. I just switch the M200 into wireless and it hunts down a connection. Ace. But sometimes I like to pair program with a colleague who also has wireless. Two questions relating to that. If you can spare the time to shoot a link or two this way, I'll be grateful. 1. Is there a way to see the colleague's computer in an "ad hoc" sense, and the hot spot's internet connection, at the same time, over the wireless. (My understanding is "no", but I'm hoping I'm wrong.) 2. When we hook the computers together with crossover cable, odd things happen. My M200 seems to shut down its consideration of the wireless card, so I can't see the internet connection any more. Sometimes when my colleague connects to the hot spot, I can share his connection, and sometimes I cannot. We can't see any difference in what we've done. Sometimes at the same place it works, other times not. I'm not running a Bridge, because at home, where the same computer is sometimes wired, in the docking station, and sometimes not, when I'm tableting on the couch, it wouldn't switch back and forth. I'm pretty sure he's not running a bridge either. Thanks, Ron On Sun, 15 Aug 2004 03:46:08 -0600, "Steve Winograd [MVP]" <winograd@pobox.com> wrote: >Hi, Chris and Dave.
