| Tablet takes a really long time to start up Hello: Lately, I've been noticing that my tablet takes and extemely long time to start up. It sits on the welcome screen for a bout a minute or two, then my desktop loads, but only with the background image and no icons, start menu, or taskbar. It sits on this screen for about another minute or two and then it finally finishes loading up completely. It used to happen once in awhile and now it happens like about 75 - 80% of the time I start the computer up. I"m using the Gateway M275XL machine with SP2 installed. It also used to happen before I installed SP2 so I don't think its an issue with that. And I haven't installed any software recently. RV |

| Re: Tablet takes a really long time to start up RV, go to Start/Run and type in "msconfig" without the quotes, then hit the OK button. Look on the Startup tab to see what's loading in the very beginning. You can also look at All Programs/Startup to see what programs are loading in the background to be "available" for you when you reach the desktop. You may find some items that aren't necessary. If you do, just eliminate one at a time and restart the machine to see which one it is for future reference. -- Chris H. | Re: Tablet takes a really long time to start up A full defragmentation might be a good idea, especially after installing SP2. Also here's a little performance tip that you might find useful. If you know about the page file and where to adjust it, try setting it to a static size (same min/max). This will prevent fragmentation of the page file and Windows also won't have to spend time growing/truncating it. If your page file is already fragmented, you might want to remove the page file entirely, then defrag, then create the static page file. Of course if you don't know what a page file is, then I wouldn't mess with it. I don't want to be liable for anything. :) -- Josh Einstein Einstein Technologies -------------------------------------------------------- Add ink input to Outlook with Tablet Enhancements for Outlook! | Re: Tablet takes a really long time to start up RV, in all honesty, a recommendation of a "static" pagefile is contrary to the Windows XP operating system use on Tablet PCs. I would strongly suggest before following any such suggestions you thoroughly read through the information from Microsoft Windows Storage Management/File Systems MVP Alex Nichol here: http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm The information will let you know that, contrary to the old Win98-type memory management, Windows XP does just fine if the user wants a fixed minimum, but should be allowed to automatically expand, and NEVER the same minimum and maximum sizes. One of the best "adjustments" which can be made is to assure you're NTFS install is running clusters at 4K and/or adding more RAM. You'll see an explanation in Alex's information. -- Chris H. | RE: Tablet takes a really long time to start up RV, Just another take on this. Do you have any disconnected network drives showing up in "My Computer". On occasion I have mapped network drives, and then later when not on the same network, have encountered long waits while the o/s tries to find them. -- WN Microsoft MVP - Tablet PC "RV" wrote: > Hello: > > Lately, I've been noticing that my tablet takes and extemely long time to start up. | I don't have a solution but I get the same problem sometimes. However I only get this problem when other wireless networks signals are detected upon starting up. It starts up fast with my default wireless connection but if detects others while starting up I can go make a cup a coffee, cook breakfast and take shower before it will finish... I have no idea why. Update: I'm sorry after further research it only stalls when the (SSID:SST-PR-1) shows up in the wireless connections. It seems this signal can be found in many random places and cities. I'm sure some of you have had it pop up in your wireless connections too.

| Re: Tablet takes a really long time to start up Thanks for the help guys: Here's what I found after I played around w/ msconfig.Every time I disable something called "tabUserW" the computer takes along tone to startup. otherwise it is fine. Any Ideas as to what this Tabusew thing is? I also run regular spyware checks on the comp and it didn't find anything this time except for the usual cookies. | Re: Tablet takes a really long time to start up You can speed up the connection using the settings in Network Connections. Go to the icon representing your wireless LAN, right-click and choose Properties. Then go to the Wireless Networks tab. Make sure you have a check mark in Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings at the top. In the little pane at the bottom, make sure only your LAN name is showing - highlight and Remove all others. Check the Advanced button in the bottom-right, and make sure you're set for Networks to access as "Access point (infrastructure) networks only" and then close that and OK your way out. -- Chris H. | Re: Tablet takes a really long time to start up Update on the problem: I thought it was disabling the wacom driver that was slowing me down, but even after I re-enabled it I still have the same problem. The computer sits on the welcome screen and then it loads my desktop without any icons, taskbar, or start menu, and sits on that for about a minute before completely loading. Any other suggestions? I'm not computer saavy enough to mess around with the pagefile. RV "terri" wrote: > It's the Wacom pen driver. It's definitely something you need. > > Have you updated this from the Wacom site? The LiveUpdate usually start to check new virus signature file while booting and makes the whole boot process takes several minutes to complete.
