| Motion 1300 Shuts Down Spontaneously Hi, Everyone. My Motion 1300 has started to shut down spontaneously and exhibit other strange behaviors. Sometimes, there's a BSOD for an instant before shutdown, and sometimes there isn't. Sometimes, when I turn it back on, there's what sounds like a BIOS error code: four repetitions of a long-short-short beep pattern. The same things happen when running from the battery and also with the battery removed, using either of two external power supplies. After the shutdown, even with the battery and power supply removed, the battery and wireless network lights continue to glow green for some time. I'd appreciate any tips on how to troubleshoot this problem. -- Thanks, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. I'm sorry, but I don't answer questions addressed directly to me in E-mail or news groups. Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Program http://mvp.support.microsoft.com |

| Re: Motion 1300 Shuts Down Spontaneously Definitely sounds hardware-related. Click Start menu, right click "My Computer" and click Properties. Then go to the Advanced tab and click the "Startup and Recovery" button. Uncheck the box that says "Automatically restart". You will be able to see the text of the blue screen error. You may have bad memory. I don't know any tools off hand to check this but if you search google for a memory test tool you could probably find something that will exhaustively test your entire physical memory. -- Josh Einstein Einstein Technologies -------------------------------------------------------- Add ink input to Outlook with Tablet Enhancements for Outlook! I've found something that might explain the problem: the long-short-short beep code in an AMI BIOS indicates a video adapter problem. I'm not sure that applies, though, because I've seen no sign of video problems, and my computer has a Phoenix A03 BIOS. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. | Re: Motion 1300 Shuts Down Spontaneously Hi, Steve, Did you install the new bios update that Motion recently released? If not, it might be worth a try. http://www.motioncomputing.com/suppo...nload_1300.asp -- Terri Stratton Editor / Owner http://thetabletpc.net Microsoft Windows MVP / Tablet PC "Steve Winograd [MVP]" <winograd@pobox.com> wrote in message news:u0iqg059ku1fhhskefjis0oe777u7shd8k@4ax.com... > Hi, Everyone. > > My Motion 1300 has started to shut down spontaneously and exhibit > other strange behaviors. | RE: Motion 1300 Shuts Down Spontaneously Steve, This really does sound hardware related. It would probably be worth a call to Motion Support to find out what they say. (you could ask them if this sounds like the "sudden death" syndrome). -- WN Microsoft MVP - Tablet PC "Steve Winograd [MVP]" wrote: > Hi, Everyone. > > My Motion 1300 has started to shut down spontaneously and exhibit > other strange behaviors. The problem has become worse since my first message. The computer won't start up at all most of the time, and when it does, it shuts down spontaneously, even if I'm viewing the BIOS setup screen. It must be a hardware problem. I called Motion and they're having me ship the unit back for repair. I didn't ask them about "sudden death". What is it? Thanks to you, Josh, and Terri for your replies. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Program http://mvp.support.microsoft.com |

| Re: Motion 1300 Shuts Down Spontaneously I'm glad you did NOT try the BIOS upgrade under the circumstances. My M1400 developed a USB problem that would sholw up as the USB keyboard quitting after 15 minutes to an hour; the pointing stick still worked, but the keyboard ceased. The only way to restore operation was to restart. I attempted the newly posted BIOS update in hopes of fixing the peoblem. The attempt hung the tablet midway through, turning it into the equivalent of a floor tile, necessitating a trip to the repair center.
