| Searching text in Journal Notes files created from PDF One of the great things about the Tablet PC is the ability to "print" documents to the Journal Notes Writer so that they can be annotated with the pen interface and then searched electronically rather than working with paper files etc. I have noticed that the text of the Journal Notes are nicely searchable when the source documents came from Web pages, MS Office docs etc - - all it seems except when documents came from PDF files. My annotations can be searched ok, but not the text of the source PDF document. That is really too bad, especially since the direct PDF interface itself does not permit the use of ink as you can with Office 2003 docs. Does anyone have a solution for this? |

| Re: Searching text in Journal Notes files created from PDF I guess that would depend on whether or not Adobe is sending its print output as a bitmap image or as text. It sounds like it's sending out an image of the document. If you have Office 2003, try printing to the Microsoft Office Document Imaging. It's not nearly as full featured as journal for marking up, but it has built in OCR (optical character recognition I think) which can turn even images of text into usable text. It can also be marked up on a Tablet PC using the pen tool. The ink is nice and smooth but there's no eraser tool. :) To erase, you have to right click the ink stroke and delete it. -- Josh Einstein Einstein Technologies -------------------------------------------------------- Add ink input to Outlook with Tablet Enhancements for Outlook! | Re: Searching text in Journal Notes files created from PDF Gerry, when you "print" a PDF file to Windows Journal, it is printing as a graphic, not individual text with pictures as separate objects as you've correctly noted from web page, Office, etc. It is really the format Adobe uses, I believe, and the same results come up with OneNote, GoBinder, etc. What you can do with the PDF open is to use "Save as Text" on the File menu. You won't have the graphics involved, but you can open and insert the text information in all three programs above, making the information available for Search. -- Chris H. | Re: Searching text in Journal Notes files created from PDF Thanks Josh, Anyone know if there is a way to get Adobe Acrobat to output to text when "printing" to Journal Notes so JN can search the text? Its frustrating because JN is able to index every other type of document that I have tried. I just noticed that the Microsoft Office Document Imaging driver is no longer on my machine. I updated to SP1 of OneNote and SP1 of Office 2003 a few days ago, so wonder if that took it out? Does anybody know how to re-install MDI? | Re: Searching text in Journal Notes files created from PDF Thanks, but its really too bad. Saving as text without the graphics is normally not satisfactory. I would hope that either the next version of Journal Notes will address this, or that Adobe Acroba Reader comes up with a new version that supports pen annotation. The other option I want to explore is the possibility of printing to the Microsoft Office Document Imaging driver. As noted in my previous posting, this is now gone from my Tablet and am asking if anybody knows how to reinstall this. Anybody know? | Re: Searching text in Journal Notes files created from PDF Gerry, it is Adobe. They really haven't lifted a pen toward changing their products for Tablet PC usage. Believe me, if Microsoft "fixed" the issues (remember Agilix with their GoBinder have the same "problem") then Adobe would be all over them. 8-) -- Chris H. | Re: Searching text in Journal Notes files created from PDF Yeah Journal isn't the problem. I'm not 100% positive on the image vs text print output but I'm pretty sure Adobe would have to correct that. In Add/Remove programs, change the office installation to add new features. Make sure that Office Document Imaging is installed. I think that's what it's called. Sorry I can't be more specific but I always just do a "Full" Office install so it's always there. -- Josh Einstein Einstein Technologies -------------------------------------------------------- Add ink input to Outlook with Tablet Enhancements for Outlook! | Re: Searching text in Journal Notes files created from PDF I guess I have to mention here that Agilix GoBinder and FranklinCovey PlanPlus handle searching PDF files just fine. I am not surprised that Journal does not search it, it is somewhat difficult to extract the text. We did spent considerable time however making sure this feature works in GoBinder. So if you want searchable PDF download a 30 day trial of GoBinder at www.GoBinder.com. Bernd Helzer Agilix Inc. Adobe and Adobe alone can address how they output to a printing device. Unless I'm mistaken though, Acrobat will output text if that is the way the PDF was encoded. Some folks assemble their PDFs from scanned images of documents, so the PDF only contains pictures. |

| Re: Searching text in Journal Notes files created from PDF That's probably true. I didn't think of it that way. In that case, OCR would be the only way to recognize the text. -- Josh Einstein Einstein Technologies -------------------------------------------------------- Add ink input to Outlook with Tablet Enhancements for Outlook! | Re: Searching text in Journal Notes files created from PDF Acrobat, even the free Adobe Reader version, will "output" text with File/Save As Text, however, most times it is up to the user to realign everything. After the text file is created, you need to set up sentence and paragraph structure again. -- Chris H. | Re: Searching text in Journal Notes files created from PDF I found that a new program written for tablet PC ONLY is a GREAT replacement for the Windows Journal and makes PDF, handwriting or anything completely searchable. Download a trial copy of GoBinder at http://www.gobinder.com/index.aspx I has fantastic calendaring (outlook compatible), contact and much much more. Any of your searching problems will simply go away.
