| Upgrade XP Pro to XP Tablet PC? Greetings all, I recently purchased a tablet PC and want to move my configuration from my notebook to my tablet PC. By configuration I mean all installed programs, files, settings and passwords. Can anyone provide a solution? I have tried the following: 1)File and settings transfer (doesn't really transfer much configuration/programs). 2)On the tablet PC: restore all files from the old computer (without overwriting) and then import the old XP Pro registry into the Tablet and then import the Tablet PC registry again to overwrite any overwrites by the XP Pro registry import. (90% of the settings are imported, but some programs won't work (Office XP, Zonealarm (even after reinstall). 3)(Most promising)Image of the old drive in the tablet (has the configuration I want); BUT I need to know how to do an inplace upgrade to XP Tablet PC and use the Tablet PC license for XP not the old license. |

| Re: Upgrade XP Pro to XP Tablet PC? Trying to "move" all your programs from one to the other is a dangerous situation, as you may wish to do in your #2. The installation of the programs themselves supply the proper entries into the Registry. I would recommend not using this method or your #3. You currently, since the Tablet is new, have a factory install of the proper drivers specific to your Tablet. I wouldn't mess with that at all. It is much better to get a clean, fresh installation of the programs you normally use, than attempt to "import" them on top of Windows XP Pro and the Tablet PC Edition superset. I would suggest you do run File and Settings Transfer Wizard (FAST for short), taking a very close look at the information you can transfer, so it picks up all your personal files. Here's a very good analysis of FAST: http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm If you have a LAN, you can even use FAST from the old computer to the Tablet. -- Chris H. You might want to take a look at Intellimover, from Detto software (http://www.detto.com/Intellimover/index.html). It doesn't to applications - you'd be far, far better off reinstalling from the original disks for them - but it preserves just about everything else. -- -- Ian Betteridge = Freelance journalist E: ianbetteridge@mac.com AIM: ianbomb100 M: +44 (0)7957 235463 Skype: ianbetteridge W: http://technovia.typepad.com |

| Re: Upgrade XP Pro to XP Tablet PC? Agree that copying programs won't work. One caveat with File and Settings Transfer wizard that you should be aware of... Make sure that your username is the same on both machines. The reason is because of the way the wizard moves registry entries to certain paths. If, for example, you use Microsoft Outlook and the path to your PST file is: C:\Documents and Settings\joshe\Local Settings\etc..\outlook.pst And you move it to a computer where your new profile path is: C:\Documents and Settings\Josh Einstein\... etc... The path will point to the old path which in most cases works (with some apps it might cause error messages) but it can put files where you're not expecting them. Twice that's happened to me and I ended up deleting the old profile during some "housekeeping" including my outlook pst. :) I've also noticed it moves things like add in registrations over. If you have MapPoint installed for example (or TEO, another popular add in that I've heard of :) ) but you don't have it installed on the new machine, Office will still try to load the missing add in. Just some things to watch out for. -- Josh Einstein Einstein Technologies -------------------------------------------------------- Add ink input to Outlook with Tablet Enhancements for Outlook! | Upgrade XP Pro to XP Tablet PC? Thanks for your answers they were informative. I have however done this before in 2 different scenarios (eg. moved from Windows NT to Windows XP and moved the Windows XP to new hardware 3 times). Basically the original NT Server install on my server dates back to 1997 and so far Microsoft products have been able to grow with my needs. In the first instance I did an inplace upgrade to Windows XP (took half a day, no problems) and the hardware upgrades also took about half a day each. The tablet is the first time I am encountering a roadblock in installing software and configuration. Now the reason for not wanting to install all the programs over again is: if you have a few hundred programs installed with their own configurations; the time it would take to configure them they way they currently run would be a nightmare! Since it's possible to upgrade an install from Windows NT or even Win 98 to Win XP, I am sure the upgrade from XP Pro to XP Pro tablet PC is a much easier thing to accomplish (for the programmers at MS). I am therefore trying to get a hold of this upgrade software/CD even thought it might not be available to comsumers it might be available to MSDN or whatever and that's my key question in posting here. >-----Original Message----- >Greetings all, > >I recently purchased a tablet PC and want to move my >configuration from my notebook to my tablet PC.
