First time tablet user here, long time PC user, and Vista user since beta.
Anyway I just bought an HP 2710p Tablet, Vista Ultimate, all patches, not
SP1. Love it!!
Except for one issue.
I use it in tablet mode (protrait), keyboard tucked away. It goes into
standby either by timeout or I tap start, and the sleep button. No problem.
When I wake it up (still in tablet portrait mode) the screen orients
(rotates) into landscape mode, uses half the screen and will not put up a
keybord or let me "write" in my password.
I have to unfold it into the laptop style, and use the keyboard to enter my
password. Then while it is setting there in laptop mode, it rotates the
screen back to portrait. Now I can fold it all back into tablet mode and
everything works fine.
No functionality loss just very iritating.

Anyone have any ideas?

what orientation does it come up in if you boot it from old when folded
as a tablet?

What does it do if you set it up to restart from standby without a
password (Control Panel/ Power Options)

It could be that when it recovers from standby it is picking up the.
settings for the default user until you put in the password.

Cold start comes up in landscape (as it should)
Restart, came back in landscape (as it should)
Standby, came back in landscape (Again as it should)

2. As a tablet,
Cold start came up in portrait (as it should)
Restart, came back in portrait (as it should)
Standby, came back in landscape and switched back after I logged in using
the keyboard (wrong)

3. I tried your suggestion about the password and that fixed the issue.
However this is not secure. I use my tablet for both corporate work and
personal.

So I think you are correct, I think it is keeping that setting from
somewhere, but where?
I can't find anything in help or MS knowledge base on default settings other
than rotation sequence in the tablet settings.

So it's half fixed. :-)

My suspicion is that there is a corrupted key in the registry. Where
however is a mystery. I don't really understand what settings MS uses
when the system recovers from standby & hibernate before you put in a
password. Some seem to be the user who has the machine locked, some are
the default user.

One idea you could try

As a tablet, rotate the screen into landscape mode. Use it for something
(anything) then put it into standby.

See what it recovers to?

If that works properly you may have reset the registry key - then go
back to portrait mode and see whether things are fixed.

Beyond that I would report the problem to HP. If it came like that, then
they should fix it. It may be that a full system restore would do it

Funny you mentioned the landscape and standby to reset it.
After I posted my previous message I went through a couple of other tests
rotating standby, reset etc and poof it started working correctly.
Wierd.

No problem, you just confirmed that it was probably a bad entry in
whatever registry key(?) the data about screen size/orientation was
stored in.
