Tablets and PDA's

I have an Acer TravelMate running XP Tablet.
While I love the TravelMate I also want to use a PDA as it still is faster to turn on and find a phone number or a quick look at appointments then booting up the laptop.
I had an old Palm but it wouldn't sync with Outlook and I tried a new Clie but same problem - Is there any PDA's that can hotsync Outlook running on XP Tablet?
How about Blackberry or Treo? can either hotsync with Outlook from an XP Tablet enviroment?

There is nothing special about Outlook running on Tablet: the issues are
just the same as for any other Windows XP PC or laptop running that version
of Outlook. I suggest that you simply get some updated synchronization
software from Palm or a third party.

Re: Tablets and PDA's

I have an old Palm IIIC that I have been synchronizing with Outlook since I
got it. I am now up to Outlook 2003 and have had no problems. The palm came
with a free 3rd party package from Chapura.

Re: Tablets and PDA's

That's what I thought but Sony's help page for the Clie says "Sony does not support the use of the CLIÉ™ handheld or the installation of the Palm™ Desktop software or other bundled software on a computer running either the Microsoft® Windows® 2003 Server operating system or the Microsoft® Windows® XP Tablet PC Edition operating system."

go figure

Re: Tablets and PDA's

"does not support" is ambiguous. They may have deliberately crippled it by
restricting the Windows version numbers that it will run on, OR there is an
unspecified problem OR it works but they won't help you. I notice that they
don't preclude use of it on the the Media Center edition which is also a
version of XP SP1 .

Re: Tablets and PDA's

Just because they say they don't support it doesn't mean that it won't work.
Sony is getting out of the PDA/Palm market at least in the US and probably
just don't want to bother. There shouldn't be any problems with syncing with
a Tablet PC than any other version of Windows XP Pro. (If you do have to
call tech support and they ask what OS tell them XP Pro since that's the
layer of the OS they will be dealing with on connection issues.)

Re: Tablets and PDA's

I have an older Handspring Visor that I have synced with various Acer and
Toshiba models. I think this a problem local to your configuration. Can you
give more details? How are you trying to Sync it? If you are using the IR
port you must activate it first on the Acer. If you are using a serial
connecter with a USB adaptor that could be an issue. What problem are you
actually seeing?

Re: Tablets and PDA's

Hi,
You can use a Pocket PC or Windows Mobile 2003 or even a Smartphone 2002 or
2003 with your Tablet PC. I do it all the time.

I guess this seems very crazy to most people around here,
since WinXP TPCE is a superset of Windows XP Professional.

Some time ago, I had to sync a SonyEricsson cell phone with
Outlook running on a TabletPC using the sync software that
came with the cellular. We did a lot of testing, installed new
software versions, compared firmware versions, etc.

After days of testing someone from the SonyEricsson
told me that there are problems with the sync software
on TabletPCs and that's why it isn't supported at the
moment.

With that background this limitation may also make
sense for CLIE handhelds.

Regards

RE: Tablets and PDA's

My Clie would sync with Outlook just fine. I just got a new Zire 72, so far I have not been able to get the regular palm desktop to sync just right, but it is the same whether I try my Acer TravelMate or my laptop that has xp home. I am using Office XP if that matters. I like the newest palm desktop that shows voice, notepad and pictures etc, on the desktop as well as the Palm, so I was not going to use Outlook this time anyway. I would like to know if there are any PIMS that take advantage of the similarities in Tablets and Palms and have compatible programs.

The only similarity is pen-input. In other respects Tablets are simply
laptops. Are there any other similarities you have in mind?
