Should I upgrade my Video-Graphics drivers from Intel?

Dear friends:

My ACER C-110-TCi refuses to recover from hybernation, although it
goes to standby mode and recovers from it very well.

I heard that the hybernation problem could be originated by a video
drivers problem.

Should I upgrade my Video-Graphics drivers from the Intel site? ACER
doesn't provides any upgrade for them.

Are the video-graphics drivers for XP-Pro the same needed for
XP-TabletPC?

Any suggestion?

Thanks

Re: Should I upgrade my Video-Graphics drivers from Intel?

I have the latest video driver on my C111 and it works much better than the
one that Acer supplies. I haven't had the hibernation recovery problem, so I
can't say it will help you. It's worth trying though. The driver is the same
for the Tablet and non-tablet versions of the driver are the same. I'm
running the Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME graphics controler version
6.14.10.3762.

Re: Should I upgrade my Video-Graphics drivers from Intel?

One thing I'd recommend is making a restore point before doing the
upgrade, or using whatever image program you're comfortable with.
While it's good to hear that Jeff tried it and it worked, as a general
rule you should always make sure you're backed up when doing non-OEM
supplied drivers, since very often the hardware has been "tweaked" for
the OEM's specific hardware package and their drivers are specific to
the hardware they provide, not necessarily the hardware the
manufacturer normally ships. And often the drivers you get from the
device maker's website doesn't have everything the OEM configured
theirs for.

I've seen more instances of drivers from the device's site (video,
etc) that caused problems on a laptop / tablet than I've seen them
*not* cause problems. Course, this doesn't normally apply to
desktops, since they don't have the proprietary hardware to the level
that notebooks and tablets do. Just a head's up to make sure you can
revert if needed.

As far as this particular instance, thanks for the head's up and
confirmation Jeff that it didn't cause any problems. I'd be curious
to know if you can resume from hibernate with the different driver.

Re: Should I upgrade my Video-Graphics drivers from Intel?

This is correct, always make a restore point before installing important
driver changes. The driver has improved video primarilly on external
monitors, but it also offers better controls/options, and fixed a screen
redraw on wake from standby problem that several people reported with the
Acers.

Re: Should I upgrade my Video-Graphics drivers from Intel?

Good idea, and forgive me for my question, but how can you make a
restore point? Do you mean to create a whole image of the C drive
using programs like Ghost?

Re: Should I upgrade my Video-Graphics drivers from Intel?

Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore then Click
"Create a restore point." You can name it whatever you want, include the
date, etc. Just make sure you use the default allocation for space because
the installation of SP2 requires a LOT.

Just wanted to be sure you'd seen it, Juan. It helped with a hibernation on
