| Starting up an application automatically when login Can some one help please. I am trying to start up(Launch) an application straight after login and have so far failed. I have tried placing the application (Short cut as well) in the start up in the document and setting for all users (including defult) but nothing is strating, instead I have a blank screen and can only start things up by launching a Ctr+Alt+Del through a hot key to start any application (Including explorer). I am using a Compaq 1100 tablet PC with Microsoft XP tablet edition. Regards, Haith |

I've seen some apps that didn't start properly when I did that without some switches. Another possibility is if you're launching something that depends on something else - either something else loaded prior or some system service. Could be that it's not launching properly because there's a dependency that hasn't been met yet at the moment it's trying to launch. Does it launch fine when you open it manually immediately after logging into the computer? John |

| Re: Starting up an application automatically when login John, Thanks mate for the reply.... I am just trying to launch an exe developed in VB. Nothing fancy really, just an exe (No dependency) and it does launch proper when I run it from explorer from example immidiatley after login. You see my problem is I want it to run it once you logged in ... A result that is acheived easily in normal XP (PC or laptop) by adding the shortcut to the startup menu. Here there is no desktop and the only way to get to explorer is through the Ctrl+Alt+Del to launch task manager and therefore select a new task and pass the full path of my application. I do not want the users to have do go through this. | Re: Starting up an application automatically when login Doing the exact same steps as you do on a desktop or laptop running Windows XP Pro should have the same result. | Re: Starting up an application automatically when login What do you mean by "Here there is no desktop and the only way to get to explorer is through the Ctrl+Alt+Del to launch task manager ". Have you configured the desktop to show icons including the My Computer icon? There is no difference between the desktop display on my Tablet PC and its predecessor laptop. By default the icons for My Computer, etc. do not display but if you go to Display Properties (either right click on your empty desktop and select prorperties or get there through Control Panel) under the Desktop tab, click on the Customize Desktop button and from the General tab select which icons you want to show including My Computer. I'm lazy and have added My Computer to my start menu by dragging it there as well. So it is at the top of my Start Menu list (note I use the classic start menu and if I recall correctly you need to set it to always display in the default style menu.) -- Cheryl D. | Re: Starting up an application automatically when login Are you putting the shortcut to the EXE itself in the startup folder? Have you tried making a CMD file that calls the EXE, and putting that in the startup folder rather than the shortcut to the EXE itself? Never tried this with the startup folder, but I have seen odd program start problems that worked when called from a batch file instead. At least worth a shot. :) John On Thu, 24 Jun 2004 00:14:01 -0700, "Haitham" <Haitham@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: >John, >Thanks mate for the reply.... > >I am just trying to launch an exe developed in VB. If so this could be the source of your problem. AFAIK the programs/shortcuts in the startup folder are launched by the explorer process itself after it starts up. Thus if you don't launch explorer.exe your startup folder programs will never be launched. You might try putting the full path to your vb app in the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Currentversion/Run/ key in the registry and get it to start up that way. If you download procxp from sysinternals.com you can see the parent/child relationships between the processes you have running on your system. |

| Re: Starting up an application automatically when login Sounds like what you are experiencing is a hanging explorer which would cause start up items to not be processed. Maybe an explorer add in or shell extension is causing this. Reboot and leave it sit for at least 15-20 minutes. This has happened to me after an unclean shut down. I suppose Windows was rebuilding something. It's also possible that explorer is no longer your shell. Check that the follwing reg keys are "explorer.exe" HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cur rentVersion\Winlogon\Shell -- Josh Einstein Einstein Technologies -------------------------------------------------------- Add ink input to Outlook with Tablet Enhancements for Outlook!
