| Can this be done with a Tablet? I would like to explore using Tablets at our school and allow students to submit papers via email so that instructors can provide written feedback on the documents and then send them back to the student. 1. Can anyone think of any issues with this? 2. Can Mac users read ink on .doc files? 3. Is there a way to lock ink so that it can not be erased? 4. Is there a program that would allow an instructor to connect a tablet to an overhead, write lecture notes on the tablet, and have those notes converted to graphic files, or a format that could easily be uploaded to the web? Thanks. |

| Re: Can this be done with a Tablet? Yes, Steve. Definitely, but on the Mac issues it would need the specific programs to read the .doc files you envision being produced. You might want to take a look at this case study at Northeastern University: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/c...eStudyID=15376 There are several Tablet PC-specific programs which can be used with educational operations in mind, including Microsoft's OneNote (http://office.microsoft.com/home/off...tid=FX01085803) and the GoBinder from Agilix (http://www.gobinder.com/index.html). -- Chris H. There are several ways to do this including 1. using ink on PowerPoint 2003 (or PowerPoint 2002 and the Office XP tablet pack). The slides can be saved as graphic files or as web format from PPT 2. writing in Journal and exporting to Web archives (.MHT files) |

| Re: Can this be done with a Tablet? Thanks guys for the responses. 1.) What are web format? Does this just mean it will convert the PowerPoint to HTML and convert the ink parts to .gif files? 2.) What is Journal? Is this a program that comes with TabletOS? Is there a reason to use Journal if you have OneNote? Thanks! I use OneNote for my handwritten and typed note taking. I like the tabbed interface. However, marking up things can be a bit of a pain for me so I use Journal for things like that. I think of Journal as my magic white board. You can draw anywhere without worrying about which drawing box a particular mark is going to end up in. You can also, and I like this part the best, group different marks together and then drag, drop, and resize them as a unit. Let's say you are creating a flow chart. You can group the label with the box and then rearrange the boxes all you want. This is not nearly as easy in OneNote. So I use OneNote for my handwritten notes and Journal for my drawing type notes. Many people have already asked for the same functionality to be incorporated into OneNote but I don't think that is going to happen any time soon. So, for now, this is a great combination for me. |

PowerPoint has a feature to save any or all slides to common image formats (not a well-known feature, but very useful). If you save Office docs to HTML or MHT format then certain page elements will be saved as image files. |

| Re: Can this be done with a Tablet? Steve, to answer number 2, you may want to give this link a try if you want an idea if Macs can read ink. http://www.macnet2.com/more.php?id=501_0_1_0 I know that several of the online comic artists use Mac OSX and wacom tablets to do their art, so ink is in the Mac OS. Just how deep it goes, l don't know As an instructor I feel I can safely say that you can easily connect any notebook (if it has VGA or s-video ports) to a projector. Check to make sure the tablet you choose can do presentations, or connect to a projector. You can then annotate slides and documents on screen, & save them in the file format that you wish. As for there being a particular piece of software to facilitate this (other than the OS, and possibly an add on pack for ms office), I don't know. On Tablets it's understood to be a particular data-type that requires system ink services to render. |

| Re: Can this be done with a Tablet? Sorry Mike, l don't think I chose the best link to demonstrate the Mac's ink (called inkwell) ability. I don't mean to argue, but I think it has been native to the Mac OS since 10 came out. And it's not just graphics, it's text/handwriting recognition as well. http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/inkwell/ -callahan "Mike Williams [MVP]" <mikew@Nospam]mvps.org> wrote in message news:u6B4JbOWEHA.1652@TK2MSFTNGP09.phx.gbl... > > "Callahan" <callahanmct@SPAMBAD.comcast.net> wrote in message > news:egEj1dNWEHA.3492@TK2MSFTNGP10.phx.gbl... > > Steve, to answer number 2, you may want to give this link a try if you > > want > > an idea if Macs can read ink. > > http://www.macnet2.com/more.php?id=501_0_1_0 > > > > I know that several of the online comic artists use Mac OSX and wacom > > tablets to do their art, so ink is in the Mac OS. I live in a college town and half of my friends have Mac's. I show them the Tablet PC and they tell me it is just a fad that will die out. I tell them if Apple had one they would buy it in an instant. Now Please don't start a Mac vs. PC war. I actually think if Apple came out with a Tablet PC (They would probably call it a G5 Tablet or something like that) that it would help legitimize the technology and Microsoft would then sell more copies of Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. |

I'm a bit skeptical about their handwriting recognition claims - anyone remember the Newton? |

| Re: Can this be done with a Tablet? Rumor has it that they are thinking about it. :) I honestly have both Macs and PCs and make a pretty penny integrating them (when I am not teaching/presenting). I too don't want to start any battles, but sometimes I do feel as if there are a few features in the Mac OS that tend to be overlooked by everyone. I mean Apple is getting better at blowing their own horn, but they still have a ways to go. Newton or no (which was great for me BTW, for some reason it learned my handwriting just fine), the capability is there. So for someone in education, when they already have Macs in the schools, it's an idea. Mind you, those wacom tablets are not portable. -callahan "Grant Robertson" <BOGUS@BOGUS.com> wrote in message news:%23V%23OcRTWEHA.1380@TK2MSFTNGP09.phx.gbl... > In article <#9B9GzSWEHA.2816@TK2MSFTNGP11.phx.gbl>, > callahanmct@SPAMBAD.comcast.net says... > > Sorry Mike, l don't think I chose the best link to demonstrate the Mac's ink > > (called inkwell) ability. | Re: Can this be done with a Tablet? The problem with Wacom writing pads is they sample primarily at the rate the mouse does. Since Tablet PC requirements are triple and higher for sampling with the digital screens, the Ink is much better recognized and the user experience is much enhanced. -- Chris H.
