| About Windows Vista Ultimate Hello I have a friend who is going to buy a Tablet PC which comes with Windows Vista Home Premium edition, but, due to work issues, she needs to be on a Domain, so she is going to buy Windows Vista Ultimate, I was wondering, is this edition suitable for her Tablet PC (since it's coming with Home Premium Edition). I think there should be no problems with the new Vista version but I rather ask the experts. Thank you!!! |

| Re: About Windows Vista Ultimate The only issues that might come up are driver ones, which should not be an issue between Vista Home Premium and Ultimate, IMHO. One interesting feature with Vista is the upgrade option. You can go to MS and they will provide and upgrade, for a fee of course, rather than buying a while copy. It's about $150 from Home Premium to Ultimate IIRC...I looked into it for a tablet I have. You might also just see if the OEM will provide the tablet with Vista Business or Premium in the first place. -- Sven MVP Mobile Devices "Daniel" <Daniel@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:D29A9D6E-A9DB-4E46-BE99-0F26934EA6BA@microsoft.com... > Hello > > I have a friend who is going to buy a Tablet PC which comes with Windows > Vista Home Premium edition, but, due to work issues, she needs to be on a > Domain, so she is going to buy Windows Vista Ultimate, I was wondering, is > this edition suitable for her Tablet PC (since it's coming with Home > Premium > Edition). > > I think there should be no problems with the new Vista version but I > rather > ask the experts. > > Thank you!!! |

| Re: About Windows Vista Ultimate Hello Sven and thank you for your answer. In fact the Tablet PC will come with a OEM Vista Home Premium, not Business (if so there should be no problem at all) but the fact is that my friend already bought Windows Vista Ultimate, so the Upgrade Option is no longer an option hehe :) But thank you for your advice. That means that, if I format the Tablet PC and install Windows Vista Ultimate, the Tablet PC will still have its features (touchscreen, text input, and so on) right? | Re: About Windows Vista Ultimate I would say you need to visit the OEM website to ensure the drivers are downloadable. They are surely the same drivers for the Tablet specific items, but are currently buried in the restore CD, not in a stock copy of Vista. You won't get all the features from a clean load of Vista, and you probably don't have access to just the needed drivers on anything that came with the laptop. -- Sven MVP Mobile Devices "Daniel" <Daniel@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:CEECD605-09A7-4BC0-B85C-CA3D4A8108B7@microsoft.com... > Hello Sven and thank you for your answer. | Re: About Windows Vista Ultimate Hello Sven I've recently checked the OEM of the Tablet PC and on the Drivers Section I see that I can download all the drivers (Windows Vista drivers). Having a clean installation of Vista and installing this drivers I think there should be no problem right? Because I saw a friend of mine changing his XP Home to XP Professional and downloaded the drivers for his notebook (in this case) and everything worked out (that is my basis why it should be the same for the Tablet PC) Best regards, and thank you very much for your help "Sven" wrote: > I would say you need to visit the OEM website to ensure the drivers are > downloadable. | Re: About Windows Vista Ultimate >> should be no problem right? << Tablet's not the same animal as a notebook... the windows os is different... so, short answer, no. If you elect to go anyway, be sure you have a _full_ image backup or oem restore disks... you will need them when you come back. Beverly Howard [MS MVP-Mobile Devices] |

| Re: About Windows Vista Ultimate I would disagree with Bev on this. If your tablet OEM provides drivers for Vista on their web site, and the laptop is already running Vista, it should be no issue to load a clean version of Vista (different flavor) and then add the drivers. If you were to just upgrade, it would be even simpler, as the hardware specific drivers would just remain in place. I understand you already have the new full version of Vista to which you wish to upgrade. If you had XP and wanted to go to Vista, I would not be as sure. But since you are already running Vista, and the tablet drivers exist, and are proven, and can be accessed, there is no reason they shouldn't work on a different version of Vista. You will in fact find that most of the tablet functions swill work right after install. The touch screen will likely function normally. The drivers will likely be needed for things like assigning the tablet specific buttons, and controlling what happens when you go into tablet mode, i.e. default to portrait in tablet, and landscape in laptop, for example. Do however follow Bev's advice and make those restore CDs/DVDs that most current systems provide the ability to do. They are priceless. -- Sven MVP Mobile Devices "Beverly Howard [Ms-MVP/MobileDev]" <BevNoSpamBevHoward.com> wrote in message news:uWJBskzcIHA.1376@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > >> should be no problem right? << > > Tablet's not the same animal as a notebook... the windows os is > different... so, short answer, no. > > If you elect to go anyway, be sure you have a _full_ image backup or oem > restore disks... you will need them when you come back. > > Beverly Howard [MS MVP-Mobile Devices] > > |

| Re: About Windows Vista Ultimate The Windows operating system, in this case Vista, is not really any different than what already is there. What is different is that in certain versions of Vista (like Ultimate) there are Tablet functionalities already built in. Unlike Windows XP Pro, Tablet functionalities are already included. In XP Pro, on a Tablet PC, you would have had the Tablet PC Edition "superset" which ran on top of XP Pro. If the machine already contains (check with the OEM) the proper hardware for Tablet functionalities, such as the pen digitizer, then there should be no problems. -- Chris H. | Re: About Windows Vista Ultimate It really should be fairly easy and straight-forward. It just takes a pretty long time, so be patient and don't force it. -- Chris H.
