Re: How to Reinstall XP on Tablet PC

Question 1, have you contacted viewsonic to ask them the normal
proceedure in this case?

onward;

Does it have a keyboard, a ps2 port or recognize a usb keyboard?

If so, you might be able to get to the bios and setup so that it will
boot from an external device.

Depends on the computer, but there might be a keystroke or other button
press to trigger a boot device selection.

Back to the external cd drive, the drive itself may not present itself
as a bootable device... one way to check would be to connect it to a
working computer which offers a boot selection and see if the drive is
listed in the options.

If the cd drive turns out to be not bootable, in addition to finding
one, some usb flash memory drives can be used as boot devices so the iso
image of the CD can be installed on one and boot from that.

Re: How to Reinstall XP on Tablet PC

You should contact the support section of the manufacturer for the best
method regarding their computer. They may need to guide you to set up the
BIOS to boot off an external drive, and since their Viewsonic computer is
messed up at the moment, they would know best how to do that, if possible.

Re: How to Reinstall XP on Tablet PC

Thanks chris in the mean time seeing Ive had no luck getting my external cd
rom drive or flash usb pen to get recognised at all....I have borrowed an
exact make and model tablet same spec etc...I dont want to mess his up...but
is there now a way I can the fact I have his which is working fine...maybe a
link...or maybe copy files....I have no cables to allow two hard drives to be
linked....just worried that if I insert his hard drive into mine that I might
cause his hard drive some harm.....must be a way now seeing I have a working

Yes... but... there are a number of ducks which all need to be in a row.

In short, you need some help (viewsonic first) to determine if the
computer supports external booting and how to set that up (the bios
settings can be confusing.) If the cd drive and or the flash drive you
plan to use support booting.

The computer may be limited as to what external boot devices it
supports. Whatever device is used needs to have a system installed and
perhaps additional drivers.

If viewsonic or the manuals indicate that external boot is supported, I
would strongly point you to finding a cd drive which supports booting
and use a bootable cd.

Even then, there are going to be issues such as getting the tablet os
and drivers installed correctly.

If you are going to take this on yourself as opposed to shipping it back
to viewsonic, having a local person with good strong tech background is
highly advised.

Re: How to Reinstall XP on Tablet PC

Contact Viewsonic. You cannot just "make a copy" of someone else's hard
drive and make it work on your computer. Each license is different.
Viewsonic's Support folks should be the ones trying to help you.

Re: How to Reinstall XP on Tablet PC

As we've said before, the source of your solution is the manufacturer. You
need to keep pressure on them, ask to speak to supervisors. Be polite, but
force the issue firmly up the line until they will assist you.

Unfortunately, there is only so much we can do and it is up to the
manufacturer's support section to be asked to step up with a solution.
