| speech recognition on Acer TC100 I have a colleague who's doing quite well with his speech recognition on his c110, and I'm really envious. On my earlier c100, every time I actually try to do dictation, I keep getting garbled characters, usually @, in long strings. As far as I can tell, this is nothing I'm actually "saying" so I'm figuring it must be coming from ambient noises, like airconditioning. I've readjusted the mic sensitivity setting numerous times, to no avail. I suppose it's possible there was some defect on the earliest models. Has anyone heard of such? |

| Re: speech recognition on Acer TC100 Speech recognition is very dependent upon the environment and training time you spend, and is best with a voice recognition microphone on the earlier models. More recent Tablet PC models which use array locating via multiple built-in microphones like the new Motions and Toshibas are really quite good. I'd suggest spending time training your machine (Control Panel/Speech), and if you can, purchase a voice recognition-specific microphone (headsets are usually best). These days, they're available for under $30. -- Chris H. | Re: speech recognition on Acer TC100 Why won't Microsoft take the scrollbar issue with a different approach? In my opinion, why not we get rid of the mouse-based scrollbars and implement a gesture that will scroll up and down? Honestly, Windows is not mature enough for the Tablet, even with Lonestar installed. The design of Windows currently is flawed when you think of it, the GUI is built with the mouse as the only input device in mind: Start button on the bottom left, scrollbars on the right, not to mention the title bar's buttons; these won't matter for the mouse because the mouse moving around doesn't obstruct the screen. What you would think naturally is to change but maintain these features and buttons for compatibility or perhaps less retraining, but it is best when the entire operating system is built with the *pure* usability in mind, not compatibility. Don't get me wrong, I know MS is working towards that, as evident with the "Flick" and the PIM-style interface for the Tablet, but I'm saying currently Windows XP is not entirely Tablet PC friendly. |
