| Study: Nurses Not Big on Tablet PCs Someone whom I've been trying to interest in Tablet PCs just sent me this article: http://www.mobilehealthdata.com/arti...?articleid=889 "More than 90% of nurses interviewed in a recent study say they are reluctant to use Tablet PCs for bedside care. The "Mobile Computing in Nursing" study was conducted between March and May 2004 by Spyglass Consulting Group, Menlo Park, Calif." "The consulting firm interviewed 100 nurses who work in home health and provider organization settings, asking the caregivers their opinions on mobile technologies used at the bedside or during other duties. Most nurses interviewed said they were reluctant to use Tablet PCs because of their fragility, weight and inadequate battery life. However, the nurses were more open to using PDAs and PCs on mobile carts during clinical care. " It sounds to me like the nurses are telling us that smaller computers (which weigh less and are less fragile) are what they have in mind. |

If he comes up with any pithy quotes I'll pass them on. His reply was: "I don't have any pithy quotes right now. I will say this: I' m sure for any technology that you will be able to find at least one early adopter that says it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. What really counts is what a sizeable portion of the non-early adopter market says." One of the most solid rules of thumb in medicine is always to give careful consideration to what the nurses are saying. |

| Re: Study: Nurses Not Big on Tablet PCs Okay, so that study talked to 100 nurses. Because of a number of health problems, I have been in several doctors offices since I bought my tablet. In the three main ones, each member of the office staff and each of the nurses I came in contact with were very interested in my tablet. In all three cases, the tablets are now being looked at as standard office equipment. Of course, these aren't hospital nurses or home health nurses... They are members of private practices in major metropolitan area. Maybe the 100 nurses that survey talked to were just of a different mind set than those the rest of us come in contact with. Personally, I don't believe that all health care workers want a smaller display to use for input. The ones I have come in contact with generally complain more about not having enough space on a page to take notes than they do about having too much space to take notes. | Re: Study: Nurses Not Big on Tablet PCs Being from a healthcare IT background I can say that no matter how cool and high-tech a gadget is, if the doctors cannot see how it will increase their money (either through being able to see more patients or have to spend less time per patient) it will fail. I really do hope that hospitals also take into account the nurse's views but sadly many do not. That may be changing now that there is a shortage of nurses (and God I sure do hope so. How often does a person in the hospital see a doctor compared to a nurse?!?!?!) -- Gary A. | Re: Study: Nurses Not Big on Tablet PCs Did you notice that one of their major clients is Palm? And they came to the conclusion that a smaller form factor would work better? And the Palm platform has a foot hold in this vertical market, and they would hate to loose that. Now mind you I'm not questioning their objectivity or anything. -- Jeffery W. | Re: Study: Nurses Not Big on Tablet PCs I far as I've seen, its still in development in Asia. IBM has partnered with Acer on their low-end laptops. So they might be working with IBM on this. According to a source, IBM is not sure if it is going to use TabletPC OS or 3rd party software. -- Jeffery W. Do you have a sense why IBM is considering avoiding Tablet XP? Some reports suggest the IBM device will be of standard laptop size, for which it would be hard to fathom why one they would shun Tablet XP. Earlier reports suggested IBM was considering a smaller form factor, where one might imagine that they were having trouble getting small screens with high digitization resolution. |

| Re: Study: Nurses Not Big on Tablet PCs For a moment there, I thought we are about to start some Nurse joke... I guess I can see why Nurses wouldn't like Tablet. It is much easier to deal with a piece of paper. Not to mention it is much easier to DISINFECT a piece of paper (just run them thru the copier.) OK, what's next? Secretaries HATE Tablet PC??? Reason? | Re: Study: Nurses Not Big on Tablet PCs My former boss was really tight w/ IBM's ThinkPad group, he said his contact wouldn't commit on if it was the Tablet PC OS or if they would look at other options. He did let it slip that some of it depended on how stringent MS was going to be. Hey IBM did get MS to loosen up on Server 2003 Data Center requirements. I'm not sure I agree with that arraignment. -- Jeffery W.
