| Choosing Between Motion 1400 and Motion 1300 I have decided on a Motion tablet when I finally make my tablet purchase. I might wait until the new operating system is out. I was pleased when Motion came out with a new model, but I wonder why they do not offer the "view anywhere" screen on the 1400. I don't anticipate using the slate outdoors, but I will be using it under floresent light in my classroom. I have noticed that my desktop LCD is easily viewable under the classroom lighting. (I am the teacher) But I have noticed that my laptop screen is not as crisp as the desktop under the floresent lighting. I am wondering if the slate screen will also suffer in the floresent lighting, and if the "view anywhere" screen is the answer. I also think I might want to use the slate in the passenger seat of the car while on drives with my husband. Should I just get the 1300 with the view anywhere screen? Or am I missing something special by not getting the 1400? Terri |

| Re: Choosing Between Motion 1400 and Motion 1300 A couple things... 1) I've heard rumors that the M1300 View Anywhere isn't available yet and that certain sites claiming to stock it are not actually stocking. 2) There is really no need to wait for Tablet PC 2005. It's going to be a free upgrade and you could always download the release candidates today (which I've had no problems with at all.) 3) The flourecent lights shouldn't be a problem for most tablets. They're used in office buildings all the time. You have to decide whether the ability to use it outdoors is worth the extra cost. For example, I almost went with a Fujitsu with the outdoor screen but realized I probably won't use it outdoors that much, especially considering it doesn't have a keyboard. I ended up choosing the Electrovaya which is usable outdoors (not an outdoor screen, but is readable) because of the additional battery life. Choosing Tablet PCs is HARD WORK and no one will be able to help you make your decision. It's a very personal decision. -- Josh Einstein Einstein Technologies -------------------------------------------------------- Add ink input to Outlook with Tablet Enhancements for Outlook! | Re: Choosing Between Motion 1400 and Motion 1300 Hi, Terri, Depending on when you plan to actually making the purchase, there may be a M1400 with ViewAnywhere. I've used both, and there's no question that the ViewAnywhere is better in bright light and outdoors. The M1400, on the other hand, gives a much wider viewing angle. This can be a plus when the screen isn't at the perfect angle, but can be a problem if you're working on something you'd prefer someone next to you not see. -- Terri Stratton Microsoft Windows MVP / Tablet PC http://thetabletpc.net Expert Zone - http://microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/default.asp "Terri K. As I'm travelling at the moment, it's not quite worth my while. Those builds left my Tablet unbootable, even when installed on fresh SP1 builds. I've continued to see reports of the same results from builds up to 2142 so I'm holding off. I can't file bugs on any features past a failure to boot :-( I'm lunching with some Tablet Team pals this week so I may have to slap them around a bit :-) |

| Re: Choosing Between Motion 1400 and Motion 1300 Terri, I'm this close || to buying the M1400. My biggest concern is the wi-fi. PCMag has give the M1400 a pretty poor rating when it comes to wi-fi range and throughput. Right now I'm using a Thinkpad X31 and I'd hate to take a step backwards with wi-fi since I use it all the time. Otherwise the PCMag review says this is the one to buy. I'd also would like the view anywhere screen on the M1400 but the wider viewing angle on the current screen isn't a bad tradeoff. Regards-Michael G. |

| Re: Choosing Between Motion 1400 and Motion 1300 Michael I have a linksys wireless 80211b on a DSL connection. With my M1300 at the other end of my house (through 3 walls) I was getting 2-3 green bars (signal strength). I recently purchased an M1400 and now get 3-4 green bars at the same place on far end of house. I probably should have the linksys in the middle of the house but the newer motion seems to perform better. | Re: Choosing Between Motion 1400 and Motion 1300 Michael, I can't speak to the M1400 since I haven't had that much time with it, but I have both an M1200 and the M1300 and I've had no problems with wi-fi. I'm not sure what the problems PCMag are seeing, but I'll take a look at the article. The array mic and the viewing angle on the M1400 are way above the norm for Tablets. Interesting aside - the G8 conference for world leaders will be using Motions. | Re: Choosing Between Motion 1400 and Motion 1300 Terri, After reading Debbie's and your comments, I went to the Motion site and was ready to purchase. Unfortunately, looking at the terms of sale, they don't allow for a refund. That for me is a show stopper; too much money to invest for hardware that just might not work for me. I'd be buying site unseen so there is no way to judge the quality or knowing how well tabletpc software fits my needs. I doubt I'd return the tabletpc from the reading I've done, but for something I haven't had a chance to even try, $2.5k is too much money. I'm not interested in a convertible like the Toshiba since it is too heavy, kind of defeats the purpose of a tabletpc. Guess I'll wait for HP to improve the 1100 with a larger screen and stick with my Thinkpad X31 for now. Thanks. Regards-Michael G. | Re: Choosing Between Motion 1400 and Motion 1300 Check out the Electrovaya. That's the one I went with (was deciding between that or Motion). The "show stopper" for me was that Motion didn't even acknowledge my emails. But I found the Electrovaya to be a better investment. Well... I shouldn't speak too soon because it hasn't arrived yet. But from the various features and selling points, it appears to be. Electrovaya has a return policy too. But there's a restocking fee. But you won't find anyone that will take an open Tablet PC without a restocking fee. -- Josh Einstein Einstein Technologies -------------------------------------------------------- Add ink input to Outlook with Tablet Enhancements for Outlook! | Re: Choosing Between Motion 1400 and Motion 1300 Terri, Thanks for this response. This gives me a good reason to wait. (The operating system isn't a good reason to wait, as has been pointed out.) I would really like to have the view anywhere screen with the 1400, so I will wait and see what comes to pass. In the meantime I will keep reading the group and the sites and dream. Thanks again.
