| ACER Travelmate c300 HELP!! I recntly got an acer tablet pc and am very excited, but I am having a problem with the hard drive. It is FAT32 and the OS that is pre loaded takes up about 6gb and there is random files everywhere. I have used the supplied recovery disk but they are specific to ACER corp and will not let me do any partioning or change the file system type. They have used win98 boot up which cant change file types to NTFS. I just want a clean install of winxp tablet pc edition so I can partiton my drive, change the file type to NTFS and load all my acer extras w/ the recovery cds. Any suggestions ? |

| Re: ACER Travelmate c300 HELP!! It is Windows XP, so you can use the Convert tool to convert from FAT32 to NTFS without the need to reload your system. I'll post the how in a minute. | Re: ACER Travelmate c300 HELP!! Hi, Joe, In order to partition, you'll need to use a third-party tool such as Partition Magic or BootIt NG. You can do this without losing data, although you should always make a backup or image first. As for the clean install, you can't do it with the recovery CDs and the OS isn't available any other way except for development through an MSDN subscription. You can try to Add-Remove Programs through the Control Panel to remove some of the superfluous programs added by Acer. In addition to Daryl's info on conversion, you might want to read this article as to how to do it for the best cluster size - http://aumha.org/win5/a/ntfscvt.htm -- Terri Stratton Microsoft Windows MVP / Tablet PC http://thetabletpc.net Expert Zone - http://microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/default.asp "Joe C" <joebeaner3********.com> wrote in message news:88555960-501D-4DB7-B24D-9DF63CC78199@microsoft.com... >I recntly got an acer tablet pc and am very excited, but I am having a >problem with the hard drive. > It is FAT32 and the OS that is pre loaded takes up about 6gb and there is > random files everywhere. | Re: ACER Travelmate c300 HELP!! What I did was boot from a regular Windows XP install disk (what I happened to have laying around but any bootable OS cd that supports fat32 should work) and used that to partition the drive. Once the drive was partitioned I was able to use the Acer rcovery set to put the tablet OS pack to factory configuration. Even though Acer did not include a clean install option at least they don't insist on restoring their original partition size. After using their restor disks you can convert to NTFS, reinstall drivers, remove the Norton (only the shorcut is installed not the anti-virus program). -- Cheryl D. Any suggestions ? > I have the same model. Here is what I did: 1) Back up all of your actual data files. (Don't worry about your OS) 2) Run the EZ restore disk to get the machine back to factory settings and configuration. 3) Copy all of the following folders to a CD or external drive. * BOOK * CMPNENTS * DOCS * DOTNETFX * I386 * SUPPORT * VALUEADD 4) Partition and format your HDD as you choose. 5) Copy those files back to the C: partition. 6) Run the install from the i386 folder as you normally would. The install will find the special Tablet PC files required and it will look just like a normal install but those additional files will be installed. If you want to put your 'Documents and Settings' folder on a different partition than the C: partition I recommend you read the Microsoft Knowledge Base article # Q236621 and do some research on the 'unattend.txt' file. You will find that you have to install almost all of the programs that came with the factory install to get any of the special buttons to work. I'm guessing this same technique will work with most Tablet PC's. |

| Re: ACER Travelmate c300 HELP!! I'm trying to find out if I can change from FAT32 to NTFS on my Acer 310, Can anyone help me on this? I haven't had any luck in finding this information. If I can change, are there problems to anticipate? |

I haven't had any luck in finding > this information. If I can change, are there problems to anticipate? Not just 310 specifically, but works in XP: Start, Run, cmd.exe, then "convert C: /FS:NTFS". It's one-way, can't go back to FAT32 (or well, perhaps with PartitionMagic it was possible, vaguely IIRC) Problems, not that I know of. NTFS is superior to FAT32, and can be more secure. One issue if you're also running Linux and want to access the NTFS partition from there: though NTFS write support already exists, it is quite slow. - Jan |

| Re: Need help This is a Windows XP question, not specifically related to Tablet PCs, but go to your Start menu, open Help and Support then do a Search of "NTFS" without the quotation marks. You should see an entry like "Convert a hard disk or partition to NTFS format" and if you click on that you'll have a guide on how to do it. I'm on Vista currently as I'm answering this, but the wording should be pretty close by doing the NTFS search. Made sure you read through all the information before you do anything! 8-) -- Chris H.
