Hello,
I'm thinking about buying the a tablet PC for the first time. ... What
interests me is the editing capability and the software. I don't know
what the editing software can do, but I'm looking for things that
allow pen-based editing. (the handwriting recognition stuff is not
going to help me very much).

I've found software called == InkGestures == and I'm now looking for
suggestions for software that does things like this (selecting text
with the pen, and then letting you do various things with the
selection: delete, format, move, etc.).

Any "Office"-type program will allow you to use the pen for what you're
asking. The pen is seen as a cursor, i.e., mouse and most programs don't
know the difference between the two. If you're looking for something more
specific and "neat" then perhaps you could state what you're expecting to
do.

Pen-based editing does work reasonably well for editing your own documents,
but my sense is that most people would rather have a mouse and keyboard when
editing a document. A mouse and keyboard are faster unless there are
special circumstances - you are walking around and can't use a mouse or
keyboard, your hand hurts when you type, you are working with complicated
equations, and so forth.

The one circumstance when I prefer a pen for editing is when giving comments
on someone else's document. Although Microsoft's Word's "Track changes" has
its plusses, typically I think it is more flexible to write on someone's
document as I would write on paper, allowing me to add comments, not just
make changes. One can can add ink comments natively in Microsoft Word, or
for PDF files use a program such as PDF Annotator.

Thanks for these replies. ... The whole purchase depends on whether
or not I can do these things.

Specifically, I want to:
1) Use the pen as a kind of "Highlight Marker" to quickly select text;
and then
2) Apply various editing options on that text: delete, copy, bold,
etc.

This is for a 200-page paper I wrote years ago, with lots of good
material in it, but lots of outdated stuff. I want to quickly cut out
the junk and leave the good parts.... It would take me a long time to
do this with a keyboard or a mouse.

Hi Mickey,

For the kind of project I'm working on, the mouse and/or keyboard is
very slow. ... The good bits of my paper are interwoven with the
useless things. For example, In the previous sentence, if I wanted to
change the phrase "interwoven with the useless things" -- to the
sentence: "mixed with outdated things" -- to highlight the 2 words to
be changed takes some time with mouse/keyboard. ...

I could be very wrong -- I've never before owned a Tablet -- but I
imagine that the pen would be much faster, just highlighting the words
I want to change.

If you're using Word, for instance, you can do that. The InkGestures
program you mentioned from www.jumpingminds.com makes it even better. I
think for your project you would be really pleased with that combination.

I think this would take considerably more time with pen input than a
keyboard + mouse. If anyone can do better with a pen it would be
interesting to hear how they do it.

I don't believe it matters to the person writing. Someone did very, very
well with a certain hand-written Harry Potter series over the last few
years.

It has a lot to do with how a person is comfortable working... for
example, if he/she has years of experience working extensively with pen
and paper, the request is understandable.

my 2 cents is that a project like this, either with, or without pen,
will benefit enormously from a couple of days learning and practicing
keyboard shortcuts... for example, marking with the pen, <ctrl-x>, pen
tap, <ctrl-v>... use an external keyboard for speed.

Word also has a number of keystrokes and click combos to simplify
makring... i.e. triple tap to mark a paragraph

I mean, for example, in the paragraph above, suppose I wanted to bold
these 3 words: tablet, helpful, and selection. ...
I would need to first highlight the first word, then bold, then
highlight the second word, etc.

Much faster would be the capability to do all the selection first, and
then apply the "bold" command one time for all items selected.

Can that be done?

Have you tried InkGestures? Seems to me a few simple gestures and you'd be
done with exactly what you want to do. Loren has a free sample version of
the program on the web site.
