In addition to Chris' suggestion, I use a macro program mapped to one of
the hardware buttons...

....in a situation such as you describe (splitting quotes in my case) the
scenario is;

<button>
<tap "Quote">
<tap submenu "Split">

....which then simply types the keystrokes you would normally use to do
the same.
