Future of Tablet PC OS

Anyone know the direction? Is this one of those technology that dies from
MS?

Re: Future of Tablet PC OS

You should read through this newsgroup for the previous posts, Andreas.
Sales are up, interest is up, and the 40-some OEMs are producing new models.
The Tablet PC Edition 2005 will be released with Windows XP Service Pack 2
later this summer. Things are looking up.

Re: Future of Tablet PC OS

One of the best rebuttals to that article I've seen is from Rob Enderle was
also printed in eWeek. It's an article that looks at the real reasons that
MS made the announcements it did.

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1601509,00.asp

I had a face-to-face interview with Andrew Dixon (Marketing Director for
Tablet PC) at Microsoft on Tuesday. I'm working on the article now, but
there are definitely NO plans to discontinue Tablet PC support. In fact,
the Tablet OS is firmly entrenched in Microsoft's future plans.

Re: Future of Tablet PC OS

I can't think that MS would drop the Tablet PC O/S. Merge is maybe but drop it? Nope. Everyone that sees my Acer C300 thinks it is really cool. I get so much more work out of my PC now and now I seldom touch my desktop at home (it's faster, yet not as nice to use). Prices will come down and when they do, watch out! I think people don't think standard products can work on a tablet but they do. I even use my SmartSketch product with a pen more than a mouse. I have a small form factor mouse but I have used it only a few times.

I think that the thing that hurt the tablet most was the lack of on-board stuff with the earlier versions. Mine now have built-in wireless, 1GB, DVD/CD-R, USB, firewire, bluetooth, smartcard readers, etc.. I feel like batman so keep it coming MS.

Great question

This is a great question that Microsoft has worked very hard over the past few weeks to make sure the answer is clear -- The Tablet PC technology is not going to leave us. Phew. We can relax now with our Tablet PC.

Tablet PC Talk has a great interview with Andrew Dixon.

http://www.tabletpctalk.com/reviews/dixonintervew.shtml

I look forward to reading Terri's interview too. It is always nice to hear the positive things coming from the Microsoft camp. The more - the better.

FWIW, Channel9 has some fantastic videos that everyone should check out -- and you'll see how hard the Tablet PC team has worked.

Favorite part of quote

Forgot to say my favorite part of the Andrew Dixon interview by Chris D.

Dixon stated, "In fact, not only do we have a significant development effort underway for Longhorn (we spoke directionally about this at WinHEC 2004), but we have a group of people focused on Tablet technologies for the version of Windows after that."

We can extract from this quote that we'll see Tablet PC mobile technology in Longhorn and the Windows version after it. Very cool.

Re: Future of Tablet PC OS

Absolutely! Tablet PC technology is looking far forward. We had Whister
(XP) and we still have Blackcomb to see. That codename has been around for
a long time, but it's still alive and well.
