| Running XP Tablet PC 2005 RC1? Is anyone here running XP 2005 on their Tablet yet? If so, how has your experience been? Favorable? Unfavorable? Still issues to be fixed? I'm curious because I'm thinking about installing it and want to see if anyone can give me a heads-up on their experience. Thanks, Gene |

| Re: Running XP Tablet PC 2005 RC1? Yes, Gene. Some people are experiencing problems, but I haven't (knock on wood) beyond a couple of bugs. I'm very much in favor of the new Tablet Input Panel and the improved recognition it gives. If you're interested in it, but haven't done so yet, I would hold off right at the moment because it is rumored Microsoft will be announcing availability of Windows XP Service Pack 2 RC2 pretty soon. That would include bug fixes from RC1. Either way, if you decide to install one of the release candidates, make sure you have either an image of your system and have backed up all your personal files before installing, or don't mind reformatting the hard drive to start new in case something drastic happens. -- Chris H. | Re: Running XP Tablet PC 2005 RC1? Are you using Wireless Zero Configuration? It is in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services, down near the bottom. Make sure it is enabled and running. With that functional, you should be notified and be able to pick which network you want to connect to. -- Chris H. | Re: Running XP Tablet PC 2005 RC1? Okay, Trace, we should do some basic troubleshooting. Something isn't right, you need to be filing bug reports using the desktop icon "Report a XP SP2 Bug," and I need to ask some questions. First, have you looked in Device Manager, under Network Adapters, to determine if the wireless device is recognized properly and not "banged out"? There should be no little yellow question mark or a yellow marker with an exclamation point in it. Device Manager can be reached by right-clicking My Computer, selecting Properties and then going to the Hardware tab and using the Device Manager button. Second, again in the Network Adapters section, do you have more than one adapter enabled? If so, right click all but your wireless adapter and select "Disable." This only disables, not uninstalls the device, so we can eliminate that several networking devices might be in a bridged condition. Restart the machine, and see if it works. Third, go into Network Connections after the restart. You probably should only have two items in there, one being something like "Local Area Connection" which would show Disabled. That would be the Ethernet device which you disabled in the second item above. And the Wireless Network Connection should have an icon, Enabled and Firewalled Right-click the Wireless Network Connection (or whatever that icon represents, if you renamed it). Select Properties, then go to the Wireless Networks tab. Make sure there's a check mark in the box, "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings." If there isn't a check mark, please put one there. Now, on the same Wireless Networks tab, there is a section, "Preferred networks" which should be showing your LAN. Highlight that listing, and click the Properties button. On the Association tab, verify the Network name (SSID) in the time slot is the same as the name you gave your LAN in setting up your router/base station. If you're using WEP, verify the settings in the center section of the Association tab. Click the Authentication tab, and unless you're using WPA encryption, make sure there's no check mark next to Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network. On the Connection tab, make sure there's a check mark in the box "Connect when this network is in range." OK your way out. If all that doesn't work, open Internet Explorer, go to Tools/Internet Options/Connections tab and make sure there's no listing of any Dial-up or Virtual Private Network items. Select the LAN Settings on the Connections tab, and remove all check marks in any boxes. Restart the system. -- Chris H. The weird thing is, right now I'm connected, although when I click on view wireless networks, nothing shows up. And I do have the "Allow windows to configure" box checked. It's just a minor annoyance, as once I add the wireless network, everything works fine. Trace |

| Re: Running XP Tablet PC 2005 RC1? Okay, that's good, but another thought trickling around the boulders of my brain was - are you also using an OEM-provided wireless software package? I know some might have configuration software included in the original setup. The Tablet PC "should" upon a right-click of the connection icon in the Systray, give you such offerings as View Available Wireless Networks. Perhaps there's an issue of two different approaches to the wireless network setup. -- Chris H. | Re: Running XP Tablet PC 2005 RC1? Well, I have a D link 802.11b PCMCIA card because the range on the built-in sucks. However I have this problem whether using the built-in or the D link and I installed the D link before RC1 and it worked fine then. I would tend to agree that it probably has something to do with that though. | Re: Running XP Tablet PC 2005 RC1? Have you disabled the built-in wireless? Normally, after installing any card's required drivers, you should be able to uninstall the proprietary software. -- Chris H. | Re: Running XP Tablet PC 2005 RC1? Correct, for now. You need to uninstall XP SP2 and install the MUIRP first - then reinstall SP2. Remember you're dealing with beta software at the present time with SP2 and it doesn't full function as the final release may. -- Chris H.
