| New Wacom driver 4.79 still has same problems for me. I had been having all kinds of problems with my Acer C300 for quite some time. I even sent it in for repairs and they fixed some of them but a couple of others remained. They were: 1) My Tablet would go into hibernation mode right in the middle of me using it. My power management settings were set to turn off the monitor after 5 minutes, standby after 10 minutes, and hibernate at 20 minutes. But it was skipping the first two steps and going straight into standby. It only seemed to do it when in tablet mode. I don't recall it ever happening when I had been typing on the keyboard. The only way to keep it from going into hibernation randomly like this was to disable hibernation completely. 2) Also, when in tablet mode, it would randomly switch rotation from portrait to landscape. At first I thought it was a hardware problem with the sensor that detected when you rotate the screen. But they replaced that and the problem remained. When it happened I would press my tablet key to rotate it back but then a few minutes later it would decide to rotate back to portrait mode. Since it was already IN portrait mode because of me forcing it it would just redraw the screen as if I had just now rotated. If any of this happened in the middle of me writing I would end up with lines all over the screen that then needed to be erased. I had these problems with the 4.78 version of the Wacom driver. When I finally got the clue and removed the driver all the problems went away. So, when the 4.79 driver came out I decided to try it. Within minutes of installing the driver both of those problems resurfaced. So I uninstalled the driver again and it went back to normal. While I did install both the WinXP SP-2 Preview 1 and the new Wacom driver on the same day, I did not have the problems until I installed the Wacom driver. And the problems went away as soon as I uninstalled it. I have so far had no real problems that I can ascribe to SP-2. |

| RE: New Wacom driver 4.79 still has same problems for me. Hi Grant, Thanks for posting this feedback. Unfortunately this is the first I have read about either issue and we did test on a C300. Do you recall how long it took for either problem to appear? How easy was it for you to reproduce? If you happen to install the 4.79-4 driver package again please try to stop the TabletService service in the Services control panel and let me know if that helps. Once I reinstall the driver the problems start coming back almost immediately. The errors are random and only occur about once or twice per hour but that is still far too often. Yes, I was using the 4.79-4 version. I'm not really up to experimenting with this again today. If I feel the real need to get the pressure sensitive functions out of the pen again then I will try what you said about to stop the TabletService service as you suggested. Far too often, I think, testers just load something on a system and try it out for just a few minutes and think they are done. It is not until you really use something for a couple of days in your daily work that you really start to notice the problems. |

| Re: New Wacom driver 4.79 still has same problems for me. Hi root, No. I would like to know if this problem happens with the 4.79-4 driver installed but with TabletService stopped. In other words, uninstall any prior Wacom drivers, install the 4.79-4 package then from the Services control panel set the TabletService start type to disabled and stop it. This will keep if from loading on reboot. In this configuration Wintab data will not work (Wintab is provided by TabletService) but Ink data and Ink pressure will still work. I would like to know if this problem still happens in this configuration because it would help me decide if I should look at the service or the driver or perhaps something else as the culprit. | RE: New Wacom driver 4.79 still has same problems for me. Hi Grant, I agree that once or twice an hour is far too much. If I sounded confused by this problem it's because I use my C300 nearly every day and have not seen either issue nor heard reports of it. We test with as many of the TabletPCs as we can but you are right; it's hard to really run all of the ones we get in through their paces. Of the two dozen TabletPCs in the excellent comparison guide on the front page of this site, I think all but one have our digitizer. I appreciate that you took the time to report the issue. That alone can be valuable information and if you don't want to mess with it more I honestly don't blame you. | Re: New Wacom driver 4.79 still has same problems for me. Hi Grant, TabletService provides two things, Wintab support and the extra button features available in the Wacom Pen Settings control panel. Wintab is an older API that applications like Photoshop and Painter use to get pressure. Tablet PC applications such as Journal use the newer Ink API. So if you don't need to use any apps that need Wintab and you don't need the extra features provided in the Wacom Pen Settings control panel you don't really need the Penabled driver and can stick with the default driver. That said, I am going to make a guess as to what is going on. It could be that the uninstall is not removing the old tablet.exe from your system32 folder and the new install isn't replacing it. So if you do feel like messing with it again please do an uninstall. Then go to the Windows\System32 folder and make sure these files are not there: tablet.exe (if this file is not there my guess is wrong) wintab32.dll Then do a reinstall of 4.79-4. Open the Wacom Pen Settings control panel. Hold down the CTRL key and click the about box. This will bring up a diagnostic screen. Make sure the version it displays is 4.79-4. If it still gives you a problem set the service start type of TabletService to disabled and stop TabletService. As I said in an earlier post, this may help me determine if the problem is in the service or the driver. | Re: New Wacom driver 4.79 still has same problems for me. Hi root. I will see if I can make some of this clearer. TabletService is tablet.exe When I say 4.79-4 I mean the driver package you download from our site. 4.79-4 contains the driver that is on WU and the TabletService and a Wacom Pen Settings control panel. What you get from WU is just the driver. Not the service or control panel. The service is needed for Wintab and the extra features in the Wacom Pen Settings control panel. With these clarifications in mind please read the earlier post again and see if it makes more sense.
