Buying A Tablet PC

I just got a Toshiba Laptop a few months ago. They are fairly large. I am
starting a new job Monday that is a very prestigious job which interfaces
with the top CEO's, COO's, and Vice Presidents. I have to attend all Board
of Directors meetings to take notes. I'm not sure typing on the Toshiba on
my lap is a very good idea. I'm looking at a Tablet PC for taking my notes
and then converting them to typed text. There is an HP at Best Buy that
looks pretty good. I wanted to get and work on over the weekend if possible.
Not many stores carry Tablet PC's. I've only found this HP. It has Windows
Vista. I would have to load Office 2003. Would it work with Windows Vista
in translating the software? Do I need special software or should the Tablet
PC come with it? It a Tablet PC worth this? I really don't want to waste
money I don't have and buy something that I won't use much. I was hoping to
eliminate my paper planner and see my schedule, contacts, etc with this also.
I would have to run it on electrical power to use it like a planner. In
meetings I could have it all charges up and use it. Does anyone have any
suggestions yea or ney on getting this Tablet PC? It almost seems foolish
with this new laptop.

I'd say, if your employer had prestige-wise expectations
about the computer you use in meetings, he would give you
a prestigious laptop.
It seems he didn't even give you an unprestigious one,
did he ?

Taking notes on a computer during a reunion isn't very
prestigious anyway, maybe that's why. Maybe you should
wait and see what kind of meetings it is, and see if it's
the kind where assistants use laptops, and what sort of
laptops.
Is there a lot of talk to write down, or is there little talk
but taking a lot of attention to understand ? if the second,
a laptop would get in the way.
Beware of the noise the laptop would make, too.

As a newcomer, you don't want to "out-prestige" anyone,
nor to "out-modernism" the ones that already use a laptop.
At the 1st meeting, use a nice pen and a nice paperblock...
Then you'll know what kind of laptop/tablet/origami will
do, if any.

Re: Buying A Tablet PC

First, we need to know the tablet make/model before we can respond with
any reliable help...

If you review the posts here (you can search this forum using
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...tabletpc?hl=en) you will
see that your conclusions are strongly supported by many of us here,
especially with respect to the intrusive factors of "typing" vs "writing"

Options from my perspective;

Get a wacom based tablet as "touch screen" on a large screen has several
problems... for example, you can't allow your hand to rest on the screen
as you write where you can with the wacom digitizer.

For your specific needs, would recommend a smaller table or "slate" if
you can find one with a screen in the 8" range.

While others strongly disagree, a pocketpc using "Notes" in handwriting
mode is both an inexpensive way to get started and is even less
intrusive and you won't "out-prestige" anyone. The pros of this are an
easy to read screen which auto scrolls as you reach the bottom of the
screen, but the cons are that with a lot of handwriting, you can't
reliably use "recognition" but this is what I use in similar
circumstances despite having a tablet available.

Finally UMPC's are finally hitting the market... no experience with
them, but it's beginning to look like they will be the replacement for
my current pocketpc when it begins to show it's age... note, these are
almost always "touch screen" which is less of a factor since you don't
need to rest your hand on the screen itself to write.

Re: Buying A Tablet PC

If the HP is the tx series and your primary use is taking notes, I would
avoid it. HP makes an excellent tablet, the HP 2710p but this is not in
retail stores and is about $1800. As far as I'm concerned, it's my pick for
the best model out right now.
