| blue tooth and tablet pc I have a Toshiba 3505. I need to frequently print and fax reports while I go from room to room seeing medical patients with my tablet pc. This needs to be wireless as I do not want to have to go back and forth to physically connect to a fax modem or printer. 802.11b works fine but requires a second computer to function as the "server" which would be connected to a wireless router with printer or print server and fax modem. I had thought that bluetooth would be a simpler alternative but it seems very slow. I bought a zoomtel usb bluetooth adapter (class 1-- up to 100 ft range)for the tablet pc. My printer is a canon i80 with its own bluetooth adapter. The fax modem is a zoomtel bluetooth 56K modem (built in bluetooth). I was able to set them up ok and they work, but both function very slowly. When it is transmitting to the bluetooth device the cpu usage goes to 100% for a good 15 seconds or more so that I can't do other tasks. This test setting was with the devices less than 5 feet away so it should not be a distance issue. I am going to can the bluetooth approach for now but am wondering if other people are happy or sad or have a different/better experience with bluetooth? Thanks, Doug Lazenby |

You may get some suggestions from in here from helpful people, but I'd suggest also posting the question in the microsoft.public.windowsxp.print_fax group - considering the topic, you'd probably hit a wider knowledge base. Though it would be nice if you posted back in here as well regardless of the source for your solution, to share the answer if it comes from another group. I for one would like to know what you end up deciding on for future reference. I know a couple places that are not at that point yet, but are starting to think about something along the lines of what you're describing, but don't want to tie it into their current mail server. Good luck and let us know! John |

What you need is a print server. You connect it to your network then connect the printer to it. You will then send your print jobs over the network. BlueTooth is really only meant for use within a single room. |

| Re: blue tooth and tablet pc that's correct! I have bluetooth in my tablet pc and I never use it. | Re: blue tooth and tablet pc I have a Toshiba M200 with both WiFi and Bluetooth. I'm very happy with both because they are for different uses. Many people (especially in USA) compare the two but I think is like to compare apples with oranges. WiFi is a tecnology for wireless LAN. I use it at office and at home to connect the tablet to the LAN. Using the LAN I print, fax (via Windows 2003 fax server), share files and navigate in Internet. Bluetooth is a technology for wireless PAN (personal area network). I use it to connect the tablet to several devices like a Sony Ericsson T610 cellular phone, an headset, some PDAs (Palm and Windows Mobile 2003). When I link the tablet to the phone via Bluetooth I'm able to navigate in Internet via GPRS (I used it in Germany, in France, in Switzerland and in Italy - where I live). Using Bluetooth I'm able to syncronize my Notes calendar and address book with the PDAs. It is very useful when I'm on the road. Ciao Massimo Santin |
