Tablet PC to Desktop Connection

Well I can't make it work;
I want to be able to connect my Compaq TC1000 to my Desktop so I can swap files and with any luck syncronize my Outlook files.

I have tried plugging in USB cables and that doesn't work and tried running activsync too and that doesn't even get close.

Need some help please

There are several options, depending on what you already have in
place, how much data you will be copying back and forth, etc...

If you have any network equipment already there (i.e. if you're using
broadband and have a cable modem, maybe a firewall / router, etc) then
you have the option of simply getting the tablet on the network as
well. Then you can just connect over the network.

If you don't have that type of stuff already in place, you could also
consider using something as simple as a USB drive to copy files back
and forth.

As far as synchronizing, the tablet PC isn't like a PDA - so you won't
do the same things with it that you'd use to keep things in sync.
There is no native way to synchronize outlook files, but there are
several manual options, and one of the MVP's in here has mentioned a
third party program I think that works well. I think it was Terri
that talked about that in a post I evidently didn't save. So maybe
she'll jump in with some ideas too.

Do you have any existing networking equipment there?

John

Re: Tablet PC to Desktop Connection

Chris,

I had loads of problems at first (still do, in fact, but they are software
issues).

I finally made a direct cable connection (NOT USB) between the two network
ports and it works just fine.

There's a Microsoft book called "Troubleshooting Windows XP" (costs about
$20) which I used a lot to help me through the setup; the automatic setup,
which is supposed to be so good, didn't work at all.

To synchronize Outlook, you'll need separate software. I recommend SynchPst)
(www,synchpst.com).

Good luck!

Al

There *are* ways to get the tablet to talk to your computer on the
network just about regardless of how locked down the network is, but
in many cases where I've seen people do that, they've been fired for
contravening company IT policy. I'd check as Chris recommended with
the network admin.

The syncpst file that Al mentions is the one I couldn't recall - but
I've heard of many people who use it, and have never heard any
complaints about it. With that and a USB drive, I think you'd have
what you need without having to deal with the IT side of things or
working through the rest of the connectivity issues.
