| 802.11g support on Electrovaya Scribbler 2010 I've been eyeing the Electrovaya Scribbler 2010 but my chief concern is that its support for only 802.11b wireless support will make the computer a lot less useful as wireless security becomes a greater concern. What are good approaches: 1. Is an equivalent Tablet PC with 802.11g support expected soon, or are there reasons for expecting that 802.11b will persist for a long time in the marketplace? 2. Are there good ways of upgrading wireless support on the existing Electrovaya Scribbler 2010? |

| Re: 802.11g support on Electrovaya Scribbler 2010 As a general wireless statement, if the Tablet PC you're looking at doesn't include the option for 802.11b/g presently, you're not going to be able to do a simple "update" to include "g" in the future. It is different hardware. There are a lot of Tablets currently on the market which offer dual configurations. If your choice of Tablets currently offers only "b" but has a PCMCIA slot, you could always get a "g" card at some point in the future. It is a matter of investigating the availability. You might want to check the comparison charts on MVP Terri Stratton's web site: http://thetabletpc.net for further information. She always has the latest info. -- Chris H. | Re: 802.11g support on Electrovaya Scribbler 2010 It also depends on what you're willing to do. :) On my Toshiba 3500, I wanted A support, so spent under $80 for a dell truemobile 1400 802.11a/b/g mini-pci. Pulled the mini-PCI out of the Toshiba, put in the new one, and had support for three different network types. Worked well. On my current tablet, I have b/g only. So I went out last night to buy a 802.11g firewall. I'm hoping that it'll let me keep using G even if I have B devices running - they'll be locked out of this unit and using one of the other two access points I have at home. We'll see... The problem with swapping out on my old Toshiba tablet was that I could no longer use the handy switch to physically turn off the wireless. Other than that, it caused me no problems. | Re: 802.11g support on Electrovaya Scribbler 2010 Yup we have done a similar thing with the Motion M1300 when it first came out and put in an a Mini PCI and we have also put in the same DELL 1400 into others. If you feel comfortable doing it then it is possible. If you feel comfortable doing it then it is possible. Looking through the comparisons at: http://thetabletpc.net/comparison.htm it is remarkable how many of the latest Tablet PC models still use 802.11b instead of g. Are Tablet PCs slower to adapt to new technologies or is there some reason that existing 802.11g chips are not great for Tablet PCs, such as large power demands? |

| Re: 802.11g support on Electrovaya Scribbler 2010 Personally, I don't believe either of your questions is the reason. I think it is hardware availability, and a choice of the OEM which market they're going to push. For the most part, a user who may be connected to a business LAN with T-1 during the daytime probably has an 802.11b network at home. It is almost like expecting "DSL or better" for everyone's Internet connection, when most people (at least in the U.S.) are still on dial-up. -- Chris H. | Re: 802.11g support on Electrovaya Scribbler 2010 As the newer models are released, most are offering b/g and in some cases a/b/g. More models will be offered throughout this year, yet, and I'd expect to see more and more bluetooth and 802.11g. -- Terri Stratton Microsoft Windows MVP / Tablet PC http://thetabletpc.net Expert Zone - http://microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/default.asp "Mickey Segal" <ignored@example.com> wrote in message news:OgQEw6zIEHA.2128@TK2MSFTNGP11.phx.gbl... > "Paul" <info@nospam.com> wrote in message > news:OTW5dvwIEHA.520@tk2msftngp13.phx.gbl... > > Yup we have done a similar thing with the Motion M1300 when it first came > > out and put in an a Mini PCI and we have also put in the same DELL 1400 > into > > others. I wasn't suggesting that Tablet PC manufacturers are backward in their thinking; I was fishing for a scenario similar to what you describe. Historically, processor chips of a given speed arrived in laptop computers significantly later than they arrived in desktop computers. Tablet computers seem to be displaying a similar pattern, getting the technology slower than other computers. It is good to hear that there are not substantial differences in power consumption of g vs. b. |

I've asked for details. |
