i cannot get this NEC tablet to display in portrait mode no matter what setting i use in the display/settings panel. what is the way out

Have you used the screen-orientation Rotate Screen Button? The first of
the four buttons at top, in between the Wireless LAN button and the LEDs.

Rotate Screen Button - Escape Button - Fn Button - Security Button

Also in addition, as the NEC manual says, "Press Fn and Rotate Screen
buttons to change between LCD only and simultaneous LCD and CRT display
modes."
