| How to start a reinstall from a boot disk ? Hi. I am currently trying to reinstall my Tablet but am having some problems. The Tablet comes with a manufacturer Recovery CD which appears to have the normal Win XP Tablet edition with some additional tools and graphics specific to the OEM. My Tablet doesn't have any CD/DVD drive or Floppy disk built in, so I've purchased an external USB floppy and external USB DVD Drive. Unfortunately the Tablet will not boot from the DVD drive, but it does work normally in windows, afrom reading some online forums there does appear to be compatibility problems with certain drives when trying to boot from them. Subsqeuntly I tried using the Win XP Pro boot disks but it fails on the last disk. The error is suggesting it can't see the HD or a removable device. I've checked the supplied remaster disk and there is the additional $OEM$\$1 folder but most of the additional files/programs don't appear to be related to necessary installation drivers e.g. the only sub folder is is UTILS and then there are folders containing software such as Modem and Bluetooth programs. Can anyone suggest what my options are and what I could do to initate the install from Boot disks ? I have tried the install 3 times since the errors have occurred at different points. I did once make it to the main reset after the boot disks are finished but then received the same error about not being able to find the HD or removable device. I can't work out why the install doesn't fail at the same point. Thanks, Stuart. |

| Re: How to start a reinstall from a boot disk ? Hi. I've checked the bios and spoke with the manufacturer and unfortunately it just doesn't seem to want to boot from the DVD drive :( Its really annoying me atm, becuase if it did I wouldn't have to try and mess around with floppy drives :) I'll double check everything again tomorrow, but I've tested booting from the Recovery CD, as well as a fresh downloaded ISO of Tablet Edition from MSDN, and neither will boot. It appears as though the Tablet just ignores the DVD drive on boot, although it does seem to register it is there. Thanks, Stuart. | Re: How to start a reinstall from a boot disk ? Unfortunately, a lot of the OEM Recovery CD's use proprietary CD drivers for their drives, so they will not boot from 3rd party units. I have a Sony MPD-AP20U drive and a TC1000, and had the same problem. I had to make a custom disk 1 of my recovery CD's to make it work. I found instructions for this on tabletpcbuzz.com. Do a search for "boot disk" on the forums there for the same instructions. HTH! | Re: How to start a reinstall from a boot disk ? Hi Dennis, thanks for the link. I'm searching as I write this :) So just to check, you had to add the Sony drivers to the TC1000 recovery disk ? Were the drivers for a specific O/S e.g. DOS or XP ? Thanks for your help, Stuart. | Re: How to start a reinstall from a boot disk ? Stuart, I had exactly the same problem with my Acer. A solution (which works) is to take the hard drive out of the laptop and connect it to your main PC (if you have one) as a secondary hard drive. The using a decent tool in Windows (partition magic), partition the hard drive so that you have a main partition (which will be your C drive) of x size and a secondary partition of 2GB (where x is the remainder of the space you have) If you are following so far you will have a large C: partition and a 2GB D: partition. Format both partitions as FAT32. (This is important) OK, so now, take the files from the Windows XP Tablet Edition (MSDN) and plonk them onto the D partition. Put the hard drive back into the laptop. Boot from floppy to the C drive and type: D:\I386\Winnt The XP Tablet Edition setup will initialise. (You may want to add a line to the config.sys of the boot floppy to include smartdrive as it speeds the install process up a hell of a lot) Go through the XP setup process, but make sure you format the first partition to NTFS before the files are copied (this bit is self explanatory when you install XP as it asks you if you want to change file structures.) When XP is installed fully and you can see the desktop, use partition magic to change the second partition to NTFS too. Install your drivers / programs etc, and delete the Tablet XP files from the D: partition. Make a ghost image (norton ghost) and put it into the clean D: partition. Then make a boot floppy from the norton ghost installation, and whenever you need to reinstall the OS you will have an image to call from which will have all your programs and drivers already installed, and more importantly will take you arond 10 mins to restore. You only need to do it once and its a life saver. Hope this helps Cheers Simon |

| Re: How to start a reinstall from a boot disk ? I also forgot to mention in my original post than it won't be any type of CD so far. I've tried the Recovery CD, an ISO download of Tablet Ednt from MSDN, and a normal Windows XP Pro CD just to check if it would boot. None of the three would boot :( Booting from a USB floppy drive works, which isn't much help, but thought I'd mention it in case it was related to anything else :) Thanks, Stuart. | Re: How to start a reinstall from a boot disk ? I had the same issues with my 3500. So I booted from a floppy, loaded dos drivers for my cd drive, and installed the tablet PC from MSDN from dos mode. If you can boot from the floppy, you should be able to achieve this. you may need to get with the manufacturer of your drive to get the dos drivers for it (my manufacturer, Storix, had dos drivers not only for the usb but also to get it into usb 2.0 mode). Then I created a second partition, and now I use Acronis True Image to manage my images and restore as needed for rebuilds. | Re: How to start a reinstall from a boot disk ? Hi. Thanks for the suggestion. This sounds a perfect solution as I've just found out there is definately a compatibility problem with my USB DVD drive and booting. I didn't think it was possible to install Windows XP from a DOS boot ? Thanks, Stuart. | Re: How to start a reinstall from a boot disk ? Hi Simon. Thanks for all your help and write up. After talking again with the tablet manufacturer and the DVD drive manufacturer, I've been told that the DVD in fact is the issue. Supposedly the unit does not support booting which is why I'm having the problems. I'm not sure what to do at the minute. I'm happy to boot from a floppy and then install from the CD, but I can't get any boot disks to work. The Windows XP boot disk seems to go wrong after the 6th disk, and from what I understand it isn't possible to install XP from a DOS boot. So far I can get the DOS boot to work and see the CD and floppy drive, but thats about it :) I might just take the DVD drive back and get a CD drive which is known to be compatible and work (so far Iomega has been recommended). Thanks again, Stuart. | Re: How to start a reinstall from a boot disk ? Sure is! Had that option for all their 32bit systems since I first moved to MS network operating systems back with NT 3.5 Once you're booted up with the dos disk, and your cd drivers are loaded, get on the cd drive, get to the \i386 directory, and type winnt It'll start the dos based install - pretty much all the "dos based" part does is get the files copied to the hard drive, and initialize the MBR to boot it up from the hard drive. Once that's done, pull the floppy, wait for it to prompt you for a reboot, and hopefully you'll be set.
