My department is responsible for keeping workstations current with critical security patches via “software delivery push installations. Procedures for WinNt, W2k and XP are well established, but now XP Tablet PC Edition is creeping into the picture.
Our problem: patches for XP Tablet are not documented as well as the other OS’s. Several examples:
*XP Tablet Edition isn’t a selection in the drop-down on the Windows Update Catalog
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
*System Requirements for XP SP1a on Microsoft’s downloads site only lists XP Home and XP Pro.
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/p...sp1/sysreq.asp
*Microsoft’s page for MS03-039
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS03-039.mspx does not list XP Tablet Edition while a third party advice site
http://www.updatexp.com/kb824146.html specifically lists XP Tablet Edition.
Everything I read points to the fact that XP Tablet Edition is a “…superset of XP Pro SP1… therefore if a patch pertains to XP Pro SP1, it also applies to XP Tablet Edition. I just don’t have a “warm-fuzzy feeling about this. Is there documentation that specifically states: “Everything that applies to XP Pro applies to XP Tablet? We don’t want to push a patch to a tablet and have it crash.
Thanks,
Jerry
