| tabtip.exe crashes at startup Since the July 10 updates, tabtip.exe will crash at first use and will not run at all afterward. Two consecutive error reports are sent to MS with each crash. The exception code is 0xc0000005 at Offset 10370. App Ver: 1.7.2600.2663, Mod Ver 5.1.2600.2180, ModName ntdll.dll. I tried System Restore to move back prior to July 10, but still have the problem. The surrogate keyboard still works (it appears only at Windows login screen for entering password), but it is useless for handwriting even though it can be started manually. The computer is Acer C110, and I have two of them, but the other did not have the problem; however it has very little software installed on it. I did copy all of the /ink folder over from it to make sure that there was no corrupt files on the failing system. There was a failure in applying a security update on July 10 to the .NET Framework, but .NET was removed and reinstalled and only one other update to ..NET Framework continues to fail to install. This is probably not related to the tabtip.exe failure but wanted to mention it. Tabtip.exe is a critical piece of software even though I have a keyboard to use as an alternative. |

| Re: tabtip.exe crashes at startup It may very well be related to the .NET problem because tabtip.exe is a .NET application. Anything in the event log about why .NET refuses to install? Usually when you get errors like that from Windows Update they are pretty useless. But if you download .NET 1.1 redistributable and run it, it will usually give you a better error message. | Re: tabtip.exe crashes at startup I was not aware that tabtip was a .NET appl. After I removed and reinstalled the .NET 1.1 redistributable (yes it was reinstalled from the download) the Windows Update web site said I needed KB930494, so I let it start .... "Installing Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.0 Service Pack 3 (KB930494)" However it never completes (ran for 2 hours at near 100% user CPU) and its "Cancel" would not work, so I eventually forced it down using Task Manager. It produced no error messages. I tried allowing the Automatic Update function to apply it, but same problem. Then I tried the update when shutting down to see if quiescing Windows would help... Windows said applying update 1 of 1, but never shut down, so I assume this update (KB930494) is flawed and I have now isolated it. | Re: tabtip.exe crashes at startup All the .NET problems are now resolved.. even KB930494 .NET 1.0 hotfix installed once I figured out to install it before the 1.1 SP1 was reinstalled. All the .NET updates are now installed. The tabtip.exe still crashes. I do have the clearink.bat and tried it to kill and restart tabtip and tcserver. All this does is to allow it to crash again. Is there any way to reinstall tablet edition 2005? My computer had the 2002 edition originally and was upgraded with SP2. | Re: tabtip.exe crashes at startup Leo and Josh, I am having the same problem with TabTip.exe crashing. I have removed all versions of .net (1.1, 2.0 and 3) and am reinstalling dotnetfx3.exe right now. So far I have not seen any change in the behavior of TabTip. Any help short of a full reinstall of Windows XP Tablet Edition would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris |

As a temporary solution I am running SpeedScript XP Beta (<a href="http://jkontherun.blogs.com/jkontherun/ 2007/06/free-speedscrip.html">download here</a>). Chris |

| Re: tabtip.exe crashes at startup Unfortunately, debugging the crash would require some knowledge of windows debugging techniques (such as using WinDbg) and even that won't fully reveal the problem without source code. My comment about .NET possibly being related wasn't necessarily a suggestion that this was the problem, rather just a comment in response to the original poster mentioning that the .NET Framework install was also crashing. I was simply saying that because the TIP does use the .NET Framework that one could certainly be related to the other. -- Josh Einstein (Tablet PC MVP) Einstein Technologies Tablet Enhancements for Outlook - Try it free: www.tabletoutlook.com <new.connections******.com> wrote in message news:1188306471.178225.173020@22g2000hsm.googlegro ups.com... > Leo and Josh, > > I am having the same problem with TabTip.exe crashing. I still cannot use TabTip and have not found any solution to this problem. I guess I'll be reinstalling soon. Chris |

| RE: tabtip.exe crashes at startup I am having the same problem: tabtip.exe crashes as soon as I start using it. When not in tablet mode the problem does not occur. Everything used to be fine until a ran updates recently. "TxLeo" wrote: > Since the July 10 updates, tabtip.exe will crash at first use and will not > run at all afterward.
